Can I compost dog poop? Dog poop for your garden's soul maybe?

RecycleMichael

Questions about poop are always directed toward me...I think I need a new career...

You really don't want to add dog poop for a couple of reasons. The by-product of meat-eating animals contains the residue of meat which attracts vectors such as rats, possum, even flies. The fat also repels water and slows down the composting process.

Manure from cows and horses is perfectly fine for backyard composting. In fact, I got some horse manure in my compost pile recently from Expo Square.

Here is a link all about composting from our website...

We are having a contest this next weekend to promote composting held at Woodward Park. We want to find the best Tulsa Composter and give them an award. Here is more information...

Compost Happens!

Thanks for all the information! Down the storm sewer it goes!

RecycleMichael

Oh no...Don't put anything down the storm sewer.

I have dogs and we just bag it and dispose of it the garbage. It is a great second use for the grocery bags we bring home.

RM, while I know you are the expert in poop, I was told that putting dog poop in grocery bags is a bad idea.  Basically, poop, while not good for compost, is easily biodegradable.  However, when you wrap it up in non-biodegradable plastic bag, you will "mumify" it.  I was told to either put it in a paper bag (or something else biodegradable), or simply leave it (of course, keep it out of foot-traffic areas, including sidewalks), and it should break down pretty quickly.

What do you think?

Mummified Dog Poop...sounds like a great name for a rock band.

We really don't want most waste to decompose in a landfill. We want it to stay in the form it is when delivered. Decomposition in a landfill creates methane gas which is usually just vented or flared in Oklahoma.

Decomposition in a landfill also means there is a chance for leakage into groundwater.

Tulsa's trash now all goes to a landfill. They are designed to be tombs where stuff stays forever.
