Why you should cheer for the Packers

I am going to the tailgate party for the Tulsa Packer Backers fan club tomorrow. The aprty starts at noon but I won't get there until 3 or 4pm.

I bet they will have at least a hundred people hang out in the packing lot of the Southern Hills Marriott for hours tomorrow in terrible weather. Hundreds more will watch the game in the hotel bar, so many that the hotel will put televisions in the hallway so families can watch it together.

I have been a Packer fan ever since the mid 60s when every person I knew was a Cowboy fan and the Packers beat them on national TV. I probably cheered for them just to be a rebel, but I have stayed loyal and have a lifetime of Packer memorabilia and clothing.

The Packers deserve your respect for many reasons. First of all, they are the only major professional sports team owned by a non-profit. The Packers foundation gives out dozens of grants throughout Wisconsin for civic groups each year. Many other sports teams are owned by ego-driven moguls who try to dance on the sidelines and get on camera.

Secondly, they represent small town America. Green Bay only has 102,000 residents (barely bigger than Broken Arrow with no core city to be a suburb of). No major sports league would ever consider putting a team in such a small media market.

Thirdly, they are led by the greatest quarterback of all time. Brett Favre owns most of the records, but also has the best selling jersey of all time. He is to the NFL what Tiger is to the PGA. When he is on TV, the fans all watch.

Watch Brett Favre. You will be able to tell your grandkids about it and they will know who he was.

Go Pack!
Power is nothing till you use it.

Their cheese is better than New Englands....

You're preaching to the choir, RM.

Although, admittedly, the "horrible" weather here is going to be far better than there. It just *might* be a balmy zero degrees in Green Bay at kickoff.

reason #4 is that I don't want to see another Manning on every other commercial, if NYG happens to win the SB.

...I hope Favre plays next season.

The giants are going to get walked on.  you don't have to worry about seeing that dork on TV.

Guess we'll get to see the "other" Manning for one more game. What god or gods do I have to sacrifice to to get a New England loss? Man, I dislike that team. "COUGHcheatersCOUGH"

Still wasn't cheering for the Packers. Don't dislike them - just a boring team. Favre is their only saving grace.
