Cox internet running slow

Is there something going on out at the Cox Communications that they are not telling anyone.  My internet connection is running so slow that I am getting timed outs when I try to link to pages that I normally go to.  Plus, my computer keeps trying to check the connection.  What gives?

About a month ago mine did the same thing. I called cox and apparently they had a virus attack and it would wipe out your server connection.  Worth a call as they will walk you through the fix.

You might look up your brand/model of modem online and find the its local IP address and information to access its status page. From there you can diagnose if you might have a problem with signal level. I had connection problems for a while and I also had the Cox service assurance plan.... after replacing every single connector and cable between their cable coming up out of the ground and my cablemodem upstairs, it turned out to be a small nick in the exterior-mounted wire coming into the house. In the end, my downstream signal went up from about -10db to -1db. Not a bad deal for $3/mo :)

Here are my current levels on my Arris TM502G:

Downstream
   Freq/Power:    663.000 MHz    -1 dBmV    
   Signal to Noise Ratio:     37 dB    
   Modulation:   QAM256   

Upstream
   Freq/Power:   25.008 MHz    40 dBmV    
    Channel Type:    DOCSIS 1.x (TDMA)   
    Symbol Rate:    2560 kSym/sec   
    Modulation:    QAM16

If you really want a solid connection you need >30dB downstream SNR, somewhere inside of +8/-8 downstream signal level .. and the higher the upstream value the worse your connection is in general. <50 is a solid connection.
