Cracker Barrel plans third Tulsa-area restaurant

June 2, 2008 TULSA – In another stamp of approval for southwest Tulsa's emerging retail corridor, Cracker Barrel Old Country Store Inc. has submitted construction plans for a new restaurant in the Tulsa Hills Shopping Center.

That 10,101-square-foot eatery would mark the third metro Tulsa restaurant for the Lebanon, Tenn., firm, one less than those operating in metro Oklahoma City. The footprint mirrors the one that Cracker Barrel used in building its Owasso location, which opened late last year.

The construction also represents another vote of confidence in Tulsa Hills and southwest Tulsa's developing retail corridor along U.S. Highway 75.

Even though the city's retail real estate vacancy rate closed 2007 at 13.08 percent, according to a CB Richard Ellis of Oklahoma survey, many observers see potential gold in that five-mile line of developing shopping centers anchored to the north by the 725,000-square-foot Tulsa Hills, to the south by the 30-acre first phase of Tapp Development's Southwest Crossroads center in Glenpool.

Businesses plotting new stores along that corridor represent a Who's Who of retailers, from Best Buy and Starbucks to McDonald's and Marriott. Target and Lowe's have already opened at Tulsa Hills, while a prototype Wal-Mart Supercenter anchors the Glenpool center.

Cracker Barrel officials do not discuss store plans prior to opening dates, although they have touted their past success in the Sooner State.

With detailed breakdowns on lighting, sidewalks, elevation and other construction facets, site plans now before the Tulsa Metropolitan Area Planning Commission's June 4 meeting show the country-themed eatery and store will go up alongside a 3,500-square-foot Chili's Grill and Bar now under construction at the southeast corner of S. 71st Street and U.S. Highway 75, along the main entrance to the Tulsa Hills complex.

That will represent the eighth Chili's restaurant in metro Tulsa, compared to 10 in the Oklahoma City area.

The commission staff has recommended approval for the detail plan.

I am loving Tulsa Hills and hope it continues to grow, finally a quick grocery stop on my way home for work, I just wish it was a super Target or that they will get a grocery in there soon.

I really don't care about Cracker Barrel, but I'm still thrilled at continued development.
