Something to keep in mind, the ccw class if I remember right doesn't teach anything at all about safety, handling guns or shooting. It was mostly legal shoot or don't shoot stuff they talked about. So if you're a newbie you should really look into learning some basics first.

When I went, there was a lady there with her guy, you could tell she'd never done much with a pistol before. When she was doing the actual target qualification I was either in the group before or after her so I wasn't shooting I was watching her group shoot from behind the glass. She got 2 shots off screamed and dropped her pistol to the floor. Her hand was covered in blood. She had had the web between her thumb and index finger way too high on the backstrap of the pistol and the action of the slide sliced it open.

This song made me want to be a gunfighter when I was young...especially they Bob Weir version.

Marty Robbins "Big Iron"

To the town of Agua Fria rode a stranger one fine day
Hardly spoke to folks around him, didn't have too much to say
No one dared to ask his business, no one dared to make a slip
The stranger there among them had a big iron on his hip
Big iron on his hip

It was early in the morning when he rode into the town
He came riding from the south side, slowly looking all around
He's an outlaw loose and running, came a whisper from each lip
And he's here to do some business with a big iron on his hip
Big iron on his hip

In this town there lived an outlaw by the name of Texas Red
Many men had tried to take him and that many men were dead
He was vicious and a killer, though a youth of twenty four
And the notches on his pistol numbered one and nineteen more
One and nineteen more

Now the stranger started talking, made it plain to folks around
He was an Arizonia Ranger, wouldn't be too long in town
He was here to take an outlaw back alive or maybe dead
And he said it didn't matter that he was after Texas Red
After Texas Red

Wasn't long before this story was relayed to Texas Red
But the outlaw didn't worry, men that tried before were dead
Twenty men had tried to take him, twenty men had made a slip
Twenty one would be the Ranger with the big iron on his hip
Big iron on his hip

Now the morning passed so quickly and it was time for them to meet
It was twenty past eleven when they walked out in the street
Folks were watching from their windows, everybody held their breath
They knew this handsome Ranger was about to meet his death
About to meet his death

There was twenty feet between them when they stopped to make their play
And the swiftness of the Ranger is still talked about today
Texas Red had not cleared leather when a bullet fairly ripped
And the Ranger's aim was deadly, with the big iron on his hip
Big iron on his hip

It was over in a moment and the crowd all gathered 'round
There before them lay the body of the outlaw on the ground
Oh, he might have went on living but he made one fatal slip
When he tried to match the Ranger with the big iron on his hip
Big iron on his hip

Big iron, big iron
Oh when he tried to match the Ranger with the big iron on his hip
Big iron on his hip

Power is nothing till you use it.

That's what my boss told me. He has a lot of guns, and buys a lot from on line auctions.

I'd like to have a Walther PPK or HK P7.

Good for you for taking the steps for your CCW.
I used to work for Tulsa Firearms. I don't go there anymore. Take that for what it's worth.

The two choices above I would not recommend. The PPK slide will bite you, I've seen it happen to almost everyone who shoots one. It almost got me, but I knew how to hold it. In a panic situation, it will bite you. Even so, a gun that bites is not fun to shoot. Not fun to shoot=a gun that will not be practiced with.

The HK P7 pistols are fun autocockers, but again not one I would recommend for someone starting out. Plus they are fairly expensive.

Take a look at a SIG P239. Nice gun, not big, easy controls, smooth shooter. I like the SIGs alot. From the abuse they get at the range, they're very tough and reliable.

BTW, I carry a Springfield 1911 in 45ACP. Locked and loaded baby[:)]

I have a SIG P225 in 9mm and I love the thing. I'll have it for the rest of my life and trust it to  fire every time I pull the trigger.
I don't carry, but if I decide too, I might consider a P239 for a tiny bit less bulk and the rounded trigger guard.  Still I'm a skinny guy, either of these pistols would be tough for me to actually carry around concealed (I think they only come in 9mm and .40).  I think I would go for something more compact in a smaller calliber.

Keep in mind, CCW permit is not a permit to carry a gun, it's a permit to carry one concealed..

Open carry is still legal, with certain exceptions (schools, Post Office, etc.) and not terribly fashionable.

Think your wrong about this one pal.  I'm pretty darn sure that open carry is illegal in Oklahoma.  I believe it IS legal in NM.  Not sure about other surrounding states.  Attorneys?

We went by my boss' house to drop off his Escalade.  I got to see some of his firearms. He has five safes full! I guess I should have known he was serious about guns when the legal assistants and his wife are armed! She has a .38 Smith and Wesson with pink rubber grips!

He has a lot of German guns. Walther PPK pistols from before World War 2, etc. Engraved Colts and all kinds of crap. It's really neat.

I saw a Beretta Tomcat and a Beretta 84 in 380. I also saw a Walther P 88 and P 99 that were cool.

I'd like the looks of the Sig Sauer pistols, especially the model 228.

Sigs are very good. I prefer a Glock though, myself.

Just go test some out (Medlock's rents guns, so does Tulsa Firearms but we've already been over that, they suck.) and see what works best for you and what fits your hand best.

Oh and your boss would probably prefer you not post on the internets about his 5 safes full of guns. I'm just guessing, I could be wrong.

Ooh, Oooh, HERE!

Open carry is not legal in Oklahoma.

quote:
A. It shall be unlawful for any person to carry upon or about his or her person, or in a purse or other container belonging to the person, any pistol, revolver, shotgun or rifle whether loaded or unloaded or any dagger, bowie knife, dirk knife, switchblade knife, spring-type knife, sword cane, knife having a blade which opens automatically by hand pressure applied to a button, spring, or other device in the handle of the knife, blackjack, loaded cane, billy, hand chain, metal knuckles, or any other offensive weapon, whether such weapon be concealed or unconcealed, except this section shall not prohibit:

1. The proper use of guns and knives for hunting, fishing, educational or recreational purposes;

2. The carrying or use of weapons in a manner otherwise permitted by statute or authorized by the Oklahoma Self-Defense Act;

3. The carrying, possession and use of any weapon by a peace officer or other person authorized by law to carry a weapon in the performance of official duties and in compliance with the rules of the employing agency;

4. The carrying or use of weapons in a courthouse by a district judge, associate district judge or special district judge within this state, who is in possession of a valid concealed handgun license issued pursuant to the provisions of the Oklahoma Self-Defense Act and whose name appears on a list maintained by the Administrative Director of the Courts; or

5. The carrying and use of firearms and other weapons provided in this subsection when used for the purpose of living history reenactment. For purposes of this paragraph, "living history reenactment" means depiction of historical characters, scenes, historical life or events for entertainment, education, or historical documentation through the wearing or use of period, historical, antique or vintage clothing, accessories, firearms, weapons, and other implements of the historical period.

B. Any person convicted of violating the foregoing provision shall be guilty of a misdemeanor punishable as provided in Section 1276 of this title.

Don't carry a gun without a conceal and carry and don't carry one not concealed.  The latter is probably a faster way to jail, but the former will probably get you there eventually.  There are online petitions to renew the right to open carry if you desire (mixed bag IMHO).

Ah, ha.  Looks like there have been changes since former District Attorney Bill Lafortune published his little yellow booklets on firearms in Oklahoma.  (they were handy, too)

Seems Ive been operating under exception 5 while doing living history events (before that became an exception it seems).

Im guessing that was changed about the time they allowed judges to carry.  Exchanging the public's right to open carry for a judge's right to have a gun in court doesnt seem like a fair trade to me.
Pitty that such erosions happen with so little commentary.

So we have some law that allows one to keep their gun in their car at their workplace. But if you have a CCW and you don't drive to work, does that mean you're out of luck? Seems backwards.

You can keep an unloaded weapon in a vehicle.  Opinion seems to differ on how far your ammo is supposed to be from said weapon when it's unloaded in your vehicle.

I just bought a Glock from Sports World and Conan pointed out to me.  Used, but in great shape.  Glock 22 (40 Cal. S&W).  Based on the serial number it looks like it was FBI issue (Glock 22 is the standard issue FBI gun).  I searched high and low and it was the cheapest price I could find (internet or otherwise).
