Have any of you known anyone that has owned a recent vintage of this automobile?

I have a Rolls.

Not a Rolls Royce...a Rolls Downhill.
Power is nothing till you use it.

depends on the year, but typically XJ8s are unreliable POS.

I am really talking about the 2004 and above. In 2004 they dramatically changed the car.

Pass on Jag and go with the Lexus ES350. Great car.

yeah, if you want to have something to drive between the grocery store and the nursing home.

I wouldn't consider an XJ unless it were an XJR.

Resale also very bad.

I did find that same thing about the rapid decline of the resale value after purchase. I want to think that after the 2004 retool and redesign that will change.

The reviews for the 2004 Vanden Plas are all very positive. That being the case would not expect the resale value to nose dive as with the pre-2004 models. Found one website with twenty or so reviews on Vanden Plas. All but one was 5 out of 5 stars. That has to account for something.

Here are some 04 and newer XJ8 Vanden Plas from Carmax, and the review of a new XJ8 from '04 from Edmunds and I would have to say that losing nearly $10,000.00 per year is a substantial depreciation. For the $20k to $30k for the Jag, I would look for a Lexus, Infiniti, or Acura TL or RL just for reliabilty sake.

Thanks everyone for your input.

The misses and I were just wanting something different to put on the road. We see all the other makes all the time and thought a change might be nice. Seems the Vanden Plas just drips with class. But, but one will have to expect an accelerated decline in equity with this car. That seems to be very unfortunate given the quality of the car. It seems the out point for such a car would be in the neighborhood of two years maximum. With this one could lessen the equity reduction as much as possible and even then you take a big hit.

Thanks again.
