So for like the first time in 20 some years, Broken Arrow has defeated Union in a football game!

Now normally, I could care less about a high school football game, but apparently A LOT of Union people take it pretty seriously.

If I remember correctly from accounts of what happened to the last Union coach, I hope this coach's wife avoids going out into public. Wouldn't want crazy people telling her in the middle of the bookstore that she and her husband aren't wanted around here!! [:P]

In short, every time Union loses a sporting event, its a reason to celebrate. Its like Luke Skywalker dropping that photon torpedo down the exhaust port of the Evil Empire's Death Star.

Union (and Jenks for that matter) are the evil empires of high school sports around here, so its great to see them get blasted.

What was it, 24-9? Ouch. Someone's $90,000 salary (is that crazy for a high-school coach or what?) might be in jeopardy. [:)]

I'm still mad at Union over the preschool issue, so GO BA!!!!

I'm not sure I follow.

We all remember the last fiasco when Union ousted Kevin Wright. They looked pretty bad after that, he only lost to three teams that year.

And I remember reading about that bookstore incident involving his wife. Pretty shallow...

I love how success automatically makes you evil. BA will be great in the next few years if they keep Lancaster's program... he is the one who started the empire in Jenks[xx(]

What makes them an evil empire? The simple lonely fact that they are good?  So I guess OU, USC, Ohio St, and Florida are all evil empires as well too?  Alot of the kids that play for Jenks and Unin High School have played with each other for years upon years.  They have something called chemistry and know how to work/interact with each other.  Their families have contributed countless hours, money and time to get where they are today.  How does that make them evil?  So because they are successful at what they do, makes them evil?  I guess Toyota, Honda, Southwest Airlines, Michael Phelps, USA softball team, and May/Treanor Volleyball pair are evil as well.  You sir/mam are a dumb ***

sgrizzle

I went to union back when they were the poor school with the losing sports team nobody gave a s__t about who had one successful school and TPS took it away. All this current animosity about them being snobs, evil and dominating seems odd to me.

My "Evil Empire" quote is perhaps taken a little out of context. However, telling a coach's wife that she isn't wanted around these parts IS evil.

And I've heard many stories of how good high-school athletes are recruited away from their schools and end up at Union and Jenks.

And I remember reading that Kevin Wright was offered $90,000 to coach Union. Maybe I'm in the dark here, but is that the standard pay for a high-school football coach in Oklahoma, or is it just something that Jenks and Union do?

The New York Yankees spend way more $$ than other major league baseball teams on their salaries, and YES, I do think of them as the Evil Empire of Major League Baseball. I'm not necessarily saying that the people within these organizations are evil, but the imbalance in money spent makes the sport less of a sport and more of a business venture, and that turns me off.

I'm a big college football fan, but high-school is high-school. They are just kids. It all seems to be taken a little too seriously to me.

MacGyver

Not sure that I care how much the coach is paid - I think more is better - or what resources are allocated to football - just don't take it away from academics -  but the subordination of academic considerations to football in the big Tulsa suburban schools is out of hand.

Have you noticed the OKC suburban schools have already split (Edmond, Moore, and Putnam City before that)?  These disticts realized they couldn't provide as good of an education to their kids with MegaSchools.

Jenks, Union and BA are too large.  Do you really want your kids going to a school where the administrators only know the heroes and the zeros?

These schools need to split, but that won't happen as long as they continue to dominate state football.

Let the flaming begin...

Do you have proof of this assumption? I think the three schools do very well academically and Jenks gets the majority of their money from the booster program and I would assume the same for the other schools. You have a much better shot at getting an athletic scholarship than an academic. As far as recruiting... who wouldn't want their kid to play for Jenks/Union/BA? Jenks and Union are recognized on the national level... I would take my kid out of Rogers to play for them any day.  Even if they did recruit, the kids give up their summers and work hard throughout the year...one star doesn't make the team. I witnessed a lot of kids come to Jenks for a chance to play, but most of the kids that came from outside the system couldn't keep up and gave up.

And you don't think there isn't big money in college football?  Between the boosters, tv contracts (Notre Dame) and the payouts for going to conference championships and bowl games, ticket/concession sales, you bet your *** there is big money in college football.  Not to mention the pay that smaller schools get to go play a powerhouse like OU or USC.  And these are "kids" that have only been out of high school for 1 and 2 years.  Have you actually gone to any high school football practices or workout programs over the summer? It isn't exactly a walk in the park.

You "have heard" that these schools have recruited/ do recruit, do you have proof?  Or is it just hearsay from your neighbors?

And once again like your original post stated "from accounts of what happened".  There are two sides to every story and alot of times things are blown way out of proportion.  I have a hard time believing it went down like that.  People around here are passionate for their football, but they are also kind people (generally speaking).  You do have your exceptions like inteller, I will admit.

Talk to any sports team owner, and most will tell you they are in it for the money.  It definitely is a business.  Look at the MULTI million dollar media contracts these teams sign, it is mind blowing.

The yankees spend alot more money which means they have alot more to lose.  The playing field might not be even in MLB without a salary cap, but on the flip side, you have a few owners who refuse to spend money on the team, they just care about the bottom line (royals, marlins, pirates, brewers).

Correct me if I am wrong, but what I am getting from your posts, is that you are characterizing or judging all these schools based on one account about one situation.  I think that is a very shallow way of thinking personally, but we are all entitled to our own opinion.
