My dog allows me to call him a pet as long as I:
- feed him.
- throw the toy both inside the house and, for a better workout, in the back yard.
- give him a scratch behind the ears.
- let him outside to do his business.
- give him a treat when I raid the fridge.
- ...

He is allowing you to use a pet name for him.  Sounds like you are well trained, too.

Oh good, I'm not in trouble.  I never refer to Butch as a pet.  I guess I can keep calling him "Hey Dipshit!"

I get away with calling mine whatever I want, just as long as it's not late for dinner (I know, bad joke, but couldn't resist)
