Seattle City Council: Help still wanted

SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER EDITORIAL BOARD

The pay is darn good, $96,500 per year. But applicants aren't exactly beating down the doors for a spot on the Seattle City Council.

Around midday Thursday, just under two dozen people had filed for council appointment as a replacement for departing Councilman Jim Compton. The council will pick someone to fill his seat until the November general election.

There are capable applicants, but some of them have lost recent runs for city office. It would seem to be poor judgment for the council to pick someone whom voters had passed over.

The city will benefit if there is good competition among a strong pool of well-qualified candidates. Filing ends today. There are precedents for the city benefiting from a last-minute filing. In 1989, Norm Rice won office as mayor after showing up to file 20 minutes before the deadline.

$96,000!!! If the City of Tulsa paid even HALF this much, people would be lined up to Owass-a to run for council.  Just goes to show you what a terrible job it is.  You either are a glutton for punishment or have political ambitions to want that job.

It must be even worse in Seattle if they have to pay them that much to incent good candidates to run.  Granted, cost of living is higher in Seattle, but not THAT much higher, outside of home prices.
