You really can't make this stuff up:

   Candidate seeks textbooks as shields

OKLAHOMA CITY --A candidate for state superintendent of schools said Thursday he wants thick used textbooks placed under every student's desk so they can use them for self-defense during school shootings.

"People might think it's kind of weird, crazy," said Republican Bill Crozier of Union City, a teacher and former Air Force security officer. "It is a practical thing; it's something you can do. It might be a way to deflect those bullets until police go there."

Crozier and a group of aides produced a 10-minute video Tuesday in which they shoot math, language and telephone books with a variety of weapons, including an AK-47 assault rifle and a 9mm pistol. The rifle bullet penetrated two books, including a calculus textbook, but the pistol bullet was stopped by a single book.

Why does a video of Republicans shooting up books seem entirely appropriate in this bizarre campaign season?

Bwaaahaha.

Watching the video, I thought he was going to have the kid hold up the book to demonstrate.

Maybe if we would add a few pages on the science of creation, that book would have stopped the rifle fire.

Speaking of Republicans and education .... There seems to be this idea that if Istook were to be elected governor that all teacher pay raises would end. This could not be further from the truth. Istook wants to continue raises! The only difference between him and Henry on this issue is that Henry wants to give all teachers the same amount. Istook wants to give good teachers higher pay raises than the lower performing teachers. So which way is better? ISTOOK!! If you give the better teachers higher raises, teahcers will want their students to perform better so that they can get the higher pay raise. --- This is the system that most successful businesses use, why should we not use it in teacher pay?
