Restaurant Sales Tax

I had dinner Saturday night at Lanna Thai at 72nd & Memorial.  Between two dinners, two glasses of wine and a beer (uh, yes I was dining with someone else, I'm not that big a pig [;)] ), the tab was $51.00 & change- no big deal, I expected that.

I took a second look at the itemized tab, I was charged $5.99 for sales tax- roughly 12%.  Yes, sales tax.  There were only two of us, so no, there was no "enforced gratuity".  I did not deduct the difference from the tip though I was tempted.  I wanted to ask my server, but she went AWOL after she ran my card.

Have I missed something in a new tax I'm not aware of?  I don't mean to cast dispersions on Lanna Thai as I love their food and the music on Saturday nights- but still that doesn't seem right.  I intend to call LT this week and check on it, but figured I'd quiz you guys before I make an donkey of myself.

Power is nothing till you use it.

I dunno, RM.  I'm used to seeing 8.517 on my reciepts when I've dined and drank elsewhere.  Some of them clearly display the percentage being calculated.  I assume liquor tax is automatically added into the price of whatever I'm drinking.  I guess I need to dig out some old reciepts and see what I've been paying elsewhere.

Good thing they tax it at a hire rate, clearly it dissuades people from over imbibing...

Where is AOX shouting "regressive tax!" when you need him?
