TPS food among massive meat recall

Tulsa Public Schools has pulled 137 cases of chicken-fried steaks from its food inventory after officials discovered that they are part of the largest meat recall in U.S. history.

Administrators said they had no "definitive information" that any of the product had been served to students or employees, but it could have been any day.

"Most of it is in cold storage at TPS or at the (meat) processor, but some of it was in the process of being delivered or was delivered to schools," said TPS spokeswoman Tami Marler. "No chicken-fried steak will be served until an inspector can get out there to determine exactly where it came from."

Marler said the district was not among the approximately 150 school districts notified by the U.S. Department of Agriculture about meat that originated from California-based Westland/Hallmark Meat Co.

TPS administrators would like to know why.

"Someone in our Purchasing Department saw the news this week about other Oklahoma school districts having recalled beef and thought, 'How could we not have it when we're the largest school district in Oklahoma?' " Marler said Tuesday. "We would never have known if we had relied on the USDA."

Hossein Akhtarkhavari, district manager for Sodexho, TPS' child nutrition contractor, said the district purchases beef products through the National School Lunch Program, which matches buyers with USDA-approved providers such as Westland/Hallmark Meat Co.

After orders are placed through the USDA, commodity beef is shipped directly from slaughterhouses to a TPS contracted meat processor.

What does that have to do with feces?

As I understand it, the recall has to do with a failure to comply with FDA regs involving handling of non-mobile stock.  There is no listed danger to the product itself nor any reported illness from it.  The recall is purely a red tape affair from what I know.
