My son is active military & has been stationed in Dallas Region, via Duncan, Oklahoma.  I'd like to know if anyone has lived there recently & would share information about the town..good side vs bad side, mainly civilian or military?  Life beyond farming, etc.,etc.

The websites I've found make Duncan seem like a nice little town.  I cant seem to find information online about nice rentals &/or things for a single 25 yr old, athletic person to do.  Any ideas, suggestions would be appreciated.

MOMMA's glad her boy is going to be closer to home.[^], although my sailor is not so happy about Duncan.  He's gonna learn to be well-rounded for sure!  Thanks for your ideas & suggestions

I'm not following your statement "stationed in Dallas region, via Duncan"  I assume you're saying he's going to be living in Duncan.  I've known a lot of people from Duncan from attending OU and they were all very sharp people. My dad's known a lot of very successful people over the last 50-60 years from there as well.  I've been there several times over the last 20 years and it really is a nice town but keep in mind, it's basically a small, rural town like thousands of others across the midwest and southest so keep expectations reasonable.  BTW, it's a reasonable drive into OKC and Dallas (where I live) isn't that far.  Where is he moving from?

I spent quite a bit of time in and around Duncan in the '90s/early '00s building out wireless communication sites.

BigD has it right. It's a small rural town like thousands of other towns in OK/TX/KS. It's not particularly heavy on military. The big employer is Halliburton and oil related businesses are still numerous in the area. Much of the employment comes from small shops/factories and standard Generica retail shops. At least the cost of living there is still cheap, particularly compared to Dallas.

From Duncan, you're only an hour away from Wichita Falls, TX...20 minutes from Lawton, OK...less than 2 hours to OKC and around 3 hours to Dallas.

There's not a whole lot to do in SW OK...but for the athletic-inclined, there's plenty of places to hike/bike/jog.

I always thought the people there were friendly and courteous. The only real negative thing I've heard about Duncan is it's standing as one of Oklahoma's most active areas for meth labs, despite increased funding for law enforcement focused on reducing this scourge.

My sailor was stationed in Pearl Harbor for 4 yrs.  His job was "driving" & monitoring the gadgets of a nuclear sub while under.  He wanted to be stationed closer to home & requested a transfer to Dallas.  (Momma told him, he had it made where he was, but he's a determined fella)  After he packed his belongs & made Dallas plans, the Navy informed him Duncan would be his new home.

He's going to be selling the Navy to our youth.."Travel the world", blah, blah, blah.  My son has seen places he'd probably wouldnt have, including Duncan. [:D]

He was raised in Oklahoma, its just going to be a culture/weather shocker for him from Hawaii to Duncan, ocean & mountains vs rural & rolling hills.  There's a purpose for Duncan & not Dallas.  He'll discover the meaning in time.

Thanks for the information.  We're going to take a road trip that way soon.
