Wow, here's a sweet endorsement which has been overshadowed by endorsements from the likes of John Edwards.  Hamas is endorsing Obama.  I'm surprised FOTD has not posted this gleeful news before now.

"Sen. Barack Obama has harshly criticized Sen. John McCain for making an issue of an endorsement by Hamas, but the Democratic candidate said in a new interview he understands why the terrorist group supports his presidential bid....

"My position on Hamas is indistinguishable from the position of Hillary Clinton or John McCain," he responded. "I said they are a terrorist organization, and I've repeatedly condemned them. I've repeatedly said, and I mean what I say: Since they are a terrorist organization, we should not be dealing with them until they recognize Israel, renounce terrorism, and abide by previous agreements."

Obama insisted he has been "very adamant about Israel's right to defend itself" and vowed to maintain America's strong ties to the Jewish state, if elected.

The senator said he welcomed "the Muslim world's accurate perception that I am interested in opening up dialogue and interested in moving away from the unilateral policies of George Bush, but nobody should mistake that for a softer stance when it comes to terrorism or when it comes to protecting Israel's security or making sure that the alliance is strong and firm. You will not see, under my presidency, any slackening in commitment to Israel's security."

The Atlantic asked Obama to respond to former President Jimmy Carter's suggestion that Israel resembles an apartheid state.

"I strongly reject the characterization," the Illinois Democrat said. "Israel is a vibrant democracy, the only one in the Middle East, and there's no doubt that Israel and the Palestinians have tough issues to work out to get to the goal of two states living side by side in peace and security, but injecting a term like apartheid into the discussion doesn't advance that goal. It's emotionally loaded, historically inaccurate, and it's not what I believe."

This one does not pass the smell test.

Either we get A) more of the same from Obama or B) he will be a bigger bumble-**** on foreign policy than Bush.

Obama's position is clear and indistinguishable from McCain's.

Why, then, does it not pass the "smell test"?  How about some REASONS.

I love Hamas.

We usually eat it with carrot sticks or celery.

I always base my decision for whom I will vote on the recommendations of terrorist groups.  Since they are honest and have our best interest at heart, I am sure that a terrorist group would never try to trick us.

Right, Hamas is going to renounce terrorism and recognize Israel.

Right, Hamas is going to renounce terrorism and recognize Israel.

I dunno, that sounds pretty straightforward.  He sets the conditions, positions himself pretty squarely within current American policy, and that's about it.  Notice he doesn't follow up with, "And I predict that this is all going to happen within the first 48 hours of my presidency."

THAT would be naivete.

Barack Obama is extending his lead in superdelegates as the Democratic Party coalesces behind him.
Congressmen Howard Berman and Henry Waxman -- both from California, both key committee chairmen, and both leaders in the Jewish community -- added their blessings.
Berman, chairman of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, added: "Barack Obama has laid out a foreign policy vision driven by principle and conviction, and he understands that our moral authority and our safety as a nation go hand in hand. I spoke with him about a number of foreign policy issues that most concern me. He assured me that he shares my views. The moment President Obama takes office, we'll send a powerful message to the world that America is back and ready to lead again -- that we haven't abandoned the values that made us the light of the world, and neither should anyone else."

I hear Obama is a Muslim......hee hee

I have to agree.  Engaging and appeasing are two different things.  Obama will engage them in a dialogue...so what?  Israel and Hamas talk every damn day, didn't you know that?  There are other ways to engage.  Israel "engaged" them a couple of years ago...they blew the crap out of a few bad guys, but failed to wrap up the conversation in a way that produced positive results.

Obama is saying talk to these people, not because you like them but because you DON'T:  Detante, Nixon to China, etc.

If you talk to people as people, things can happen.  They may shift their ideology; their followers may realize that Hamas is a dead-end and start peeling away from the pack.

Diplomacy is an option that Bush ignored, "bombiran" McCain will ignore, and Obama will use.  What's naive is thinking that you can win every fight with an actual fight.

Video evidence that McCain would talk to Hamas.

And see, I agree with the Old McCain's take on it.  The New McCain, not so much.

You know I really used to like and respect McCain, but it's kinda tragic the degree to which he's compromised his beliefs to get the nomination (assuming that Old McCain was the genuine article and New McCain is the construct). And the tragedy is compounded by the fact that it's so obvious. There's evidence everywhere of what Old McCain was like, and it's really waaaaay different from what's on offer from the New McCain.

And, name one candidate in the last ten or so Presidential elections who has not changed their stance on an important issue or two to get elected.

People who think foreign policy is going to be better under McCain or Obama are sorely mistaken.  First you have to get barbarians to act civilized, that doesn't happen by holding their hand and singing kumbaya.
