TTCU FRAUD WARNING

I got a text message reading:

SUBJ: ALERT
MSG: Your Tulsa Teachers CU account is closed due to unusual activity, to re-activate call us at 704-765-1560.



I don't do business there, so this was a no brainier.  Add to that fact that the number is a Charlotte, NC number and it seems even more unlikely to be legit.  If you do call it, you get an automated message asking to verify your account by entering your credit card, bank account, and other numbers - so for shizzle a scam.

So, in case someone is gullible enough to wonder if they should call - DON'T DO IT!  If you have doubts, log into your online account and check.  Go to the bank and talk to a person.  Call a registered number for the bank.

I attempted to contact TTCU but the lines are all busy.  I assume this was a mass spamming.  I really hope they nail these kind of jerks (both for my 10 cent message, for the banks problems, and the little old lady that gets hosed).

MCI bought out that company,  I was transfered about 5 times and couldn't figure out who to talk to. I was trying to be helpful... but gave up.

A co-worker of mine just got that same text message; he doesn't even have an account with TTCU!  That should be a no-brainer, especially when the number isn't even local.

I got an email from TTCU last week warning members of the scam. Do people still fall for this crap???

I don't bank there anymore!  

Mr. Bantu Emorti, deposed ruler of Zambia, contacted me about $10,000,000 that his late wife left to him.  We are attempting to get it out of the country.  So I liquidated my bank account to help him with the transfer fees.

He's going to pay me $2 million for my assistance when the transfer clears!  Some people are so nice. [:D]

I got the TTCU phishing message around 9am, via Cingular/at&t.  The big question is how they got the address, since no one but at&t has it...

Selling information to at&t "partners" again?
I see another class action lawsuit in the works, or better yet, a criminal investigation.
at&t just settled one last week in which people were getting text messages offering free ringtones  etc only to find $10/month charges from an at&t partner for "subscribing" to a "free" service.

Now their selling info to phishing scammers.

Random telephone number generation is not that difficult. Nor is passing that information into the SMS/MMS services. I had a friend on Verizon receive the message as well.

I, on the other hand, am on Cingular/AT&T, and have not received it.

From TTCU's website:

NOTICE: Due to the recent fraud attempts aimed at both members and non-members, our phone lines are tied up and you may not be able to reach us right away. If you need to reach us immediately, please email our Member Service Department and we will reply as soon as possible. Please do not include any information such as account numbers, PIN numbers, social security numbers, etc. unless you are using our secure email.

Kudos on using a reasonable means of notifying people.  Too many businesses would fail to utilize the web to inform people that they are aware of the problem and swamped.  I hope this counts as bank fraud and actual effort is put into tracking these jackasses down.

I got two of those messages this morning and just deleted them. I have U.S. Cellular and do not use TTCU.
