If you have a lot of carpet, an Old School Red Metal top Sanitaire Janitorial Vac will last and last, we have one going on 10 years. My parents have had one for about 15 years.  I had a Dirt Devil to clean the car out with and it's crap.  Try House of Vacs or a janitorial supply co.

Wow, this is why I love TulsaNow.  Okay, I can only try one of these great tips at a time so I'm going to look for the light weight Dyson ball and see if I can find it on sale.  Any tips on where to buy?  I've got Kohl's on the list.  I'll check their circular.  Thanks again for the great information.

Please wait for some tips for availability from a local vendor. Don't jump right for the national chain store.

(Sorry, I couldn't resist. [:)])

I just looked up the specifics on the dyson website to see what the weight difference is between the lightweight and the original. There is only a 3 lb difference. The original weighs 18 lbs and the lightweight is 15 lbs.

I would check out Bed Bath and Beyond (Use the 20% coupon that you get in the mail all of the time-they actually orderd ours for us because they didn't have the animal model in the store)

I believe that Target also sells Dyson as well.

If you have lots of carpet go KIRBY. Expensive but they will take old vac as trade in. Heavy it is but I love mine, especially when the carpets need to be shampooed which is often because of 4 dogs that drag mud in.

Our dogs would think a Roomba is a toy. It would last about a day or two.

Alot of people I know like homes with central vacuums. You just plug in your vacuum hose and are ready to clean. No cords and you can clean room to room in a snap. All the dirt goes to vacuum unit in the basement.

Just Wooted a DC-18 earlier this week.  I hope its up to snuff. (3 cats and a dog here)  Every vacuum we've owned has been a miserable failure:)

I bought a DC07 Animal on sale at Target a week ago last Saturday.  Been too busy to do anything other than unpack it.  Can't wait to use it. I guess this is my idea of excitement these days.

I wooted on this same vacuum.. got it last Friday! It really sucks! :) I even sucked up a sock into the carpet brush and it auto-shutoff, I tugged it out easily and restarted the brush. No fighting with it there.

As far as suction goes, it is easily double or triple my previous cheapie vacuum. For $260 factory refurbed (came in a Dyson box) compared to $370-470 retail, I like it so far!

Gang, all I can say is if ya'll want to get rich, invent a vacuum that does not not break down and is cheap. I worked at a Genco Return center and two of the biggest return items we got were vacuums and micro-wave ovens. We had vacuum returns out the wazoo and they are a pain because of their bulky shape they are hard to package and ship to buyers who I guess fix them and re-sell them. As for vacuum brands, we got 'em all back, they all came back in equal numbers as far as I could tell. This was at the Genco return center in Indianapolis, IN, where they got returns from mostly Target stores. If you can invent a vacuum that lasts you'd be rich.

So far, all of our vacuums don't last and don't work well -except the old kirby which lasted but I may as well get a riding vacuum cleaner (doesn't work worth a damn any way).  I'd settle for one that just plain works for a while.

Got my Dyson the other day and it sucks sh*t
-lots of it, out of the carpet, off furniture, the blinds, the kitchen floor.

I'm a believer.

I live in a small place so I can clean the floors with a shop vacuum, they seem to be the most dependable vacuums around, but a shop vac. makes the task harder and slower.
