It's been a week since Ken Neal's timely editorial in the World proposing a brand new 4th Penny Sales Tax, and it's not even been noticed on these boards.

...wouldn't exactly call that 'well received'.

The Tulsa World proposing a new tax isn't exactly news.

Yawn.

Denver issued a 1 penny for mass transit. I wouldn't be surprised to see someone suggest that in the future.

The City of Tulsa proposed plan to grab the expiring 4-to-Fix-the-County sales tax, and the Vision 2025 sales taxes when they expire, pre-supposes one gigantic HYPOTHESIS:

Namely, that the County will sit idly by and let the City of Tulsa grab these "county" sales taxes "when they expire".

There is nothing to prevent the county from setting a vote of the people of the Tulsa County six months B4 these taxes expire, and with a Tulsa County Ring Full Court Press, push their re-approval, with the financial and logistical support of the County Ring's connected cronies and associated contractors.

Would the sitting Tulsa city council and Mayor at that far distant future time have the BACKBONE to fight against the renewed Tulsa County tax?

Otherwise, if voters approve the $2 billion in new street improvement and other capital improvements being proposed by Councilor Martinsen then the citizens could ultimately end up paying around 9.8% in combined city/county/state sales taxes.

By then, Mayor Kitty Taylor and Bill Martinsen will be long, faded local history by the time the voters realize they have been totally  flim-flammed and bamboozled.

+1 BUT I believe it is the general feeling on this forum that Kitty will be re-elected for a job well done (ROFLMAO).  She won't fade until SHE MAKES SURE we get flim flammed or whatever. $2 billion, 12 years...are you kidding me?

That is only 144M a year if you take out Christiansen's personal wish list fund.

The alternate plan Hewgey suggested is around 65M a year. Also, it would take care of a lot of the backlog if we lived with 1990 prices and if we assumed everyone stops driving for 4 years an no roads get anymore wear during that time.

I agree. The Christianson plan seems like a band-aid to me. Just sealing cracks?

I also am afraid that this won't really fix anything and won't get us where we want in roads. It will just be the same underfunding that we have been doing.

The Hewgley-Christiansen plan involves more than just crack-sealing and pot-hole filling.

It would also hire a number of re-paving teams.

All of the normal maintenance that the city quit doing about 10 years ago, under the reign of Saint Susan the Silly.

If you don't fill the cracks, you get potholes.  If you don't fill the pothole, you get such a bad situation that the entire street needs to be re-habbed.

Their proposal is a much more modest and reasonable approach that the Martinsen-Taylor $1.8 billion tax grab.

While we're at it, we must retire or run-off Chas. Hardt and Paul Zachary from the Dept. of Publik Werkes.

These are two sorry bureaucrats who have managed our street current fiasco.

For YEARS!!!!!!

They aren't competent to manage a kindergarten picnic.

Why should be REWARD them?

They are either:

a) Incompetent, or,

b) In cahoots with the road contractors to let them perform sub-standard work.

Either way, THEY MUST GO!

Off with their HEADS!
