ISP recommendation?

I'm trying to help out a friend who's a single mom on a limited income. I gave her a used PC last weekend and now we're looking for an ISP to get her on the internet.  Any suggestions or recommendations for a local ISP that's good and relatively inexpensive? Alternatively, a national ISP that has local access numbers would be an option. I've looked at Copper.net, Netzero, PeoplePC, and AOL - basically they all seem to be close in price and services offered. I'm not sure if she has cable so I'm leaning towards dialup at this time.

Appreciate your feedback.

Phew, I don't know how to help you there... back in the day I knew the best of the best, but I don't think any of them host dialup ISP's anymore. I know Cox has a cheapo plan that is like $25/mo, but it is probably more expensive without basic cable so that may not be an option.

There used to be local bare-bones dial ups that operated as free cooperatives.  That was so long ago, I'm just not sure.

Net Zero has dial up for $4.97 a month, that's the best bet.   That rate appears to be the first 3 months, then it goes up to $9.99. Though I have no information on reliability or effectiveness.

Hey peb!

I'm from Basic ISP and we offer nationwide, unlimited dial-up for $6.95/month. That price won't go up on your friend since it's not a sale.

Here's the list of all our Tulsa numbers:

I hope this was helpful.
Best of luck on your search!

Great!

Thanks for the feedback, guys.  I'll lay these out in a chart for her but it looks like Basic has an edge on the price, Chadwyck - appreciate your reply so I could add it to the list.

One quick question - I noticed that the access numbers were the same as one of the ISP's I listed and the signup form looked almost identical - affiliated company or is it just a limited amout of resources out there for ISP's to pull from?

If your friend would use less than 10 hours a month, I believe NetZero will still let you sign up for a free (ad-supported) account.

Wal-Mart had a service for a low rate I don't know if it is still around or not. I believe it was $9.99, this was a few years ago. [:P]
