I'm going to say this if nobody else does... Who in the world thought that Janet Jackson was a bigger act than METALLICA?!

The Metallica concert was a new low in that they used metal detectors to make sure people werent bringing cameras inside.
One could argue that it was to check for weapons, but if that were the case they would have ignored   the little point-and-shoot cameras.

Metallica probably was trying to keep parts of tonight's performance from showing up on YouTube. Even the dinkiest point-and-shoot cameras now have pretty good video capabilities.

For all of Metallica's rough-and-tough and quasi-outlaw posturing, it's been extermely protective of its material. One word: Napster.

Firstly, I dont think the experience of seeing shaky snippets of blocky flash video on YouTube anwhere near compares to the experience of seeing a live concert, so the record label isnt loosing any money that way.
Secondly, it's not the job of someone in a TPD uniform to enforce the wishes of the record labels, and thirdly,
Napster has been owned by the recording industry since 2001.

...but Im waiting for some suit (or skirt) to say that it was done for our protection.  You know, "War on Terror" and all that...

Agreed. But tell Metallica that. As I've said, the band tends to overreact. The Napster case made that abundantly clear.

And if the music act requests certain security measures in its contract, the venue is obliged to comply, whether it's by rent-a-cop or hired  TPD officers.

The BOK center had a responsibility to tell customers about the bands extreme demands but for some reason didnt.  Nor did they deploy enough metal detectors to deal with what they knew was a sellout house, hence the lines and people upset about missing the show.  BOK failed this one.

I've had the same experience at tons of other Arenas. I went to a concert at OKC where different genders had to enter at different sides of the building and then get patted down. I showed up an hour before the doors opened and got seated after the opening act finished.

Anyone who doesnt think the parking is screwed up there should listen to police on scanners during a major event.

Last night I thought there was one hellova standoff, but it was TPD trying to park people hours on end.
Think there was even a high-speed Segway chase  [:o)]

It's not the parking.  It's the Walmart/Target training everyone's had.  It freaks them out when they have to start parking down the street.

These people must never go to basketball games anywhere other than high school, Oral Roberts, or the 66ers.  They must never attend a D-I football game.  Heaven forbid they try to go to a concert or event in a city that actually lacks parking (Minneapolis - all the parking is under buildings and impossible to find unless you know what you are doing).

At the Walking with Dinosaurs event I went to people were whining about the parking - the ramp behind the convention center wasn't even half full, courthouse parking was open, and the $10-$20 lots nearby weren't full.  What they meant was there is no FREE PARKING immediately across from their destination.

Building a parking garage or god forbid surface parking dedicated to this structure would be crazy.  There are 2 public ramps within 4 blocks.  Within 6 blocks there are 3 or 4 more.  Surface parking, street parking, all sorts of parking.  If there was a dedicated structure it would be empty or the complimentary structures would be empty 350 nights a year (16 MAJOR shows that actually fill the thing).

Me?  I parked for free near Jo Mammas and walked the ~6 blocks.  Oh the humanity!

Every event I go to at the BOK (and there are a lot; I have season tix to the Oilers, as much as it pains me to admit it with the season they're having) I have parked at the 100 West parking garage.

http://maps.live.com/default.aspx?v=2&FORM=LMLTCP&cp=q0s1zb700d6m&style=b&lvl=1&tilt=-90&dir=0&alt=-1000&scene=16711621&phx=0&phy=0&phscl=1&encType=1

Garage is at lower right, BOK at upper left.  That's a total of two blocks maximum, and for most people about a block and a half.

It takes me a grand total of 3.5 minutes from the corner of 2nd and Cheyenne to get to the main entrance if I walk.  If you get there early enough, that lot is ALWAYS open and has spaces.  It has nearly 1200 parking places for Pete's sake.

I've lived in a city where arena parking was a pain (Houston) visited many where I've had to walk way further (OKC, Dallas, St. Louis, Kansas City) then I do here.  If people are having problems parking, they're not doing it right.  Problem is people aren't used to us having big city issues with parking at events because the largest venue we've ever had was 12,000 at the Mabee Center and that has ample parking AND IS PRIVATE.

It just doesn't cease to amaze me that there are STILL people complaining about the parking, when that urban legend for this venue anyway has been dispelled.

Skelly Stadium used to seat 54,000 and has no parking.  But I agree with your sentiment.  [:D]

I've been to several events at the BOK center this year...and most of the time, I can park on the street, for free, at 2nd and Boulder.  Once, I had to park in the actual parking garage.  Either way, it's 2 downtown blocks from the event.  (Much less than you'd walk at Super Walmart to do some basic shopping.)

What a great graphic explanation!
