In an OpEd today entitled McCain Loses His Head, George Will writes what many have been thinking, namely that McCain's actions of late demonstrate that he does not have the temperament to be president.
quote:

It is arguable that, because of his inexperience, Obama is not ready for the presidency. It is arguable that McCain, because of his boiling moralism and bottomless reservoir of certitudes, is not suited to the presidency. Unreadiness can be corrected, although perhaps at great cost, by experience. Can a dismaying temperament be fixed?

The concern that McCain is not a maverick--that he is reckless and irrational--is spreading among those who would ordinarily support him.  His snubbing of Spain is inexplicable.  His calling for Cox's head makes little sense.  And that's not even counting his inability to keep acronyms straight (maybe he really does want to fire the head of the FEC?)

Elizabeth Drew, author of the book Citizen McCain and former supporter of McCain, has changed her view:
quote:
McCain's recent conduct of his campaign – his willingness to lie repeatedly (including in his acceptance speech) and to play Russian roulette with the vice-presidency, in order to fulfill his long-held ambition – has reinforced my earlier, and growing, sense that John McCain is not a principled man.
In fact, it's not clear who he is.

Last week, Richard Cohen wrote:
quote:

McCain has turned ugly. His dishonesty would be unacceptable in any politician, but McCain has always set his own bar higher than most. He has contempt for most of his colleagues for that very reason: They lie. He tells the truth. He internalizes the code of the McCains -- his grandfather, his father: both admirals of the shining sea. He serves his country differently, that's all -- but just as honorably. No more, though.

What do you mean by temperament?  If it's the old "he's an angry man" canard, then no.  That's not how Will was using the term, which is clear if you read the article.

I think Will is realizing what conservatives have known from the beginning.  McCain is no conservative on a variety of issues.

Nothing in that article suggests that he's interested in endorsing Obama, in fact, he says that both are clueless.

Here's an interesting excerpt from Newsweek columnist Johnathan Alter about McCain:

Given his claims of two decades of "making change," his record of legislative achievement is surprisingly thin. Nothing big on the economy, education, health care, law enforcement or other major issues.

One reason for the sparse record is McCain's history of unpopularity with his GOP Senate colleagues. Being labeled a "maverick" sounds good to the public but makes it hard to get bills passed....

Part of the problem is McCain's explosive temper. He blows up, then apologizes and is quickly forgiven. The forgiveness is "directly related to an appreciation of what he has suffered [in Vietnam]," says a Democrat who didn't want to be named talking about a colleague. "The thought of his being president sends a cold chill down my spine," Republican Sen. Thad Cochran told The Boston Globe in January. "He is erratic. He is hotheaded. He loses his temper and he worries me." Cochran, a McCain supporter, now says McCain has learned to control his emotions better. But I've spoken to four senators and two former senators in recent weeks who believe Cochran's concerns are widely shared in the Senate. Five of the six think that McCain is temperamentally unsuited to the presidency. None would speak for the record.
