Don't know if it's just me, but once I found out they used canned cheese sauce on their sandwiches, it took the 'good' out of the review I would have given it.

My suggestion; forgot this post, don't sit in the back where they keep the bulk canned stock and enjoy.

Well, now wait a minute....
This is a VERY nice family from Philly...
He had several of these sucessfully in PA and moved here 20+ yrs ago to start one here  on Brookside and had to move when Albertsons was built...Also go look @ his Health Dep. record, quite clean and the family is first class...
He also moved here to raise horses on his farm in Skiatook
As I understand it they will move to the old Cap D's around 51st and Memorial...
And by the way, it would not be a real "Philly" if it weren't covered with "real" Cheese Wiz...
It is WELL KNOWN that real Phillys have Cheese Wiz...or a generic equiv. I might guess...
YUM... I want one NOW !!!!
Maybe tomorrow....

Its been a year or so since I have been to Steak Stuffers, the guy that owns it is a great person. I have to say though when he stopped "importing" his bread from the east coast to save money the "quality" of the sandwiches wind down considerably. The failure of his second location and the move didn't help I am sure. Anyway I will have to stop in and get one in awhile.

Back on topic, I have not been following closings closely lately but I need to make a run through my lists and update.
Thank you,
Robert Town

Some authetic philly places use Cheez Whiz. It is a matter of debate in Philly as well. My problem was their meat. Bland, flavorless and dry.

Hey Steak Stuffers was good enough for Rudy and Altruism Suffers.

As far as I know the second unit did not "fail" as such .... It was busy from the git go but he is an older fella and did not want to run 2 after all...
The family is close and they have a great time running the one together(husband, wife, son daughter in-law and 2 grandkids in the summer..)...
And the move had no effect and the place was busier than ever after the move to I-44...
Cant say about the bread but the owner is picky about quality and prep, so I would hope the bread is locally baked to his specs....
I find it most tasty ..
I order mine with steak , mushrooms, bell pepper onion and cheese wiz....
You can pick other cheeses and the chicken breast (as opposed to the shredded chicken,  which is fine) is wonderful with provolone....

God I couldn't agree with you more.

The only thing I don't like about Phat's is the photo lineup of the fatties or fatties in training that have eaten 7 phillies in one sitting.

What kind of fat, fattie with no self respect thinks, "Geeez, I think I can eat me 6 of them there sammiches..." and then sit there long enought to have their picture taken.

Probably the same type of person that eats that Texas toast you buy in the supermarket that tastes like someone applied butter to the bread with a power sprayer.

The Steak Stuffers location in Broken Arrow (81st and 145th) did good business, but the owner (George VanWyck) told me he had trouble finding the kind of help that could run the restaurant to his standards in his absence.

George is partly responsible for getting me involved in neighborhood issues and zoning. When my wife and I were first married, we lived in the Marella Apartments on Riverside, and we'd sometimes walk to 39th & Peoria to eat at Steak Stuffers. (Mmmmm.... corn fritters.)

The restaurant was in a typical Brookside store front, right on Peoria. Albertson's included the site of the store in their PUD. (Coney I-lander refused to sell.) The neighborhood organized to fight the new store, in part because it meant removing several small businesses and a couple of Brookside-style commercial buildings and replacing them with parking spaces -- spaces which I have never, in 16 years, seen occupied.

One of those pictured is the owner and another one is his mom.

I ate lunch at Rick's new location last week! The ole St. Michael's Alley never looked so bright. There's a new bar with lots of wood where the cozy booths used to be. Kitchen still open to front dining room. Several 'french doors' on the entrance wall, letting in the outside light.

I can still remember delivering the Tulsa Tribune to St. Michael's Alley in the early 70's. I'd open the door, and couldn't see a thing because my eyes could not adjust to the darkness quickly enough. Lot of memories of my old neighborhood and the 'backside' of Ranch Acres Shopping Center; Liquor Store, Laundry Mat, Pool Hall, Mart Trophy. Anybody remember when the 'Safeway' burned?

Caldera

Does anyone know if the chef/owner of El Rey is going to open anywhere else?

They had a restaurant at 21st & Garnett...but it just seemed to be the wrong location for them.  The food was a decent price, and was awesome.  As an added benefit they made the best cheesecake in Tulsa!  I had promised my hubby that I'd get him one for his b-day and now they've closed!

Just wondering...
Thanks!
