In 1961, when Barack Obama was born who would have ever thought that a black man would be the Presidential nominee of a major political party in America and favored to win by a decent margin in the polls?  With backwards racial thinking at the time, a bi-racial candidate would have likely been even more remote of a thought.

When John McCain was living in squalid conditions in the Hanoi Hilton, do you think he ever once thought he might wind up being the commander-in-chief of the U.S. military?  Who would have given a rebelious under-achiever a chance at ever being a President (okay, aside from Bush II [;)] )

How about Joe Biden who bounced back from the tragic death of his wife and a child, being shunned by voters in the 1988 primaries, and surviving a brain aneurysm to be the VP nominee?  Do you think he ever thought he'd finally make it to the White House when he was laying in a bed recovering from his aneurysm?

Or Sarah Palin who vaulted from arguably one of the more anonymous Governor's seats to becoming a household name overnight?  Someone with a modest education and upbringing who started out wanting to make a difference in her home community as a city counselor to be the first woman with a legitimate shot at being VP (Mondull and Ferraro didn't have a prayer in '84).

Each has overcome long odds to get to where they are.  All four are quality people in their own right.

Without a doubt the most poetically beautiful elections in history!
When attacked by a mob of clowns, always go for the juggler.

All elections are important.  Lives hang in the balance just about every election.

I was way off on Obama.  I thought he was going to muck up Democrats' hopes to return to the White House.  I thought he was a huge risk.  He ended up being a huge man.  My party belongs to him after tonight.  The Clintons are history.

Someone here said McCain is better than his campaign and I agree.  And my guess is that it was McCain that kept this campaign from being as bad as it could have been.  My hope is that tomorrow morning when Republicans get busy reinventing themselves that they break towards the Center and that they look to former leaders like Ford and Eisenhauer.

Hey FOTD, Cheers!

I agree Conan. Who would have thought.. Very interesting post.

Whomever is elected, they will be MY President, and I will support them.

I suspect that will be Obama, and I will cross my fingers that he can lead this country out of this mess we are in.

I'll be rooting for him if he is elected.

I'll give props to this post too. :)

Great post Conan. What ever the outcome I am ready to move forward. I have lots of respect for both of these men and will be proud to have them as President.

I think if Obama is elected, he CAN bridge some gaps, and I hope that will come to be.

The man is very respectable, and I will support him as my President if he is elected.

And I hope there is no debacle as there was in 2000. Let's have a clean election!

Whodathunk this could make SNL relevant again?
I never found Fred Armisen to be very funny, but his Fauxbama is good, not so much as a mimicry but as a caricature. I love the way he holds on to his words, almost like he is savoring the taste of some of them while spitting out others. Tina's Sarah Palin is scary good.

President-elect Obama showed a good sense of class even when the Clinton campaign was tweaking him as hard as they could.

I've felt he ran with class and integrity.  I'm anxious to see what happens next.  I learned from my father to respect the office of POTUS regardless whom is behind the desk.  He's got my support when he is innaugurated.

Perhaps there will be some good new ideas which come to pass from the "lack of experience" I've accused him of.  Honestly, we are due a good housecleaning in DC what we are doing isn't working.  I want to see our new President to work as hard as possible to return us to a balanced budget and trending toward no deficit.

Very nice post Conan.

I am happily eating my words.  I didn't think I would see an african american or a female President in the White House in my lifetime.
My children tell me I am too cynical.  Their school had a mock election today.  Obama won by a "landslide" they say.  What an emotional, historical event for all of us tonight!
While I have a lot of respect for McCain, and yes he is and was better than his campaign, I am excited and hopeful to see what Obama can do for our country.

Plus having a non-(until now)traditonal name.
I hope a lot of good comes from this...Good for America.

SNL has always been relevant and topical; every season since 1986 (when i started watching in earnest) has always had something approaching comic brilliance, some sketch or actor who keeps the show as one of quality.
