I've requested this many, many times.

Could you please create a board for our photography of the Tulsa area?

I think we should have a rule, No posting pics if you wont allow them to be shared. We should want Tulsa to be promoted by allowing people to use or share good pics of what we have here. There are plenty of other places you can post a pic and not let anyone use them. Anything like this sponsored by TN should actually promote the use of and allow for LOTS of free sharing.

Those who think it is a luxury have only a fragment of a mind. Mans spirit grows hungry for art in the same way h

Well said William, I agree completely. There's so many ways we could promote our city with our pictures.

The places I found to post pictures all wanted the right to SPAM you and sell your adddress.  Since I only have one e-mail address, I chose not to use them.

It might be a nightmare for TN to moderate a picture area.  I don't know about the cost for the storage space except that it wouldn't be free.

I would like an area to post an occasional picture though.

We could get a web site for < $10 a month.  I'd be willing to manage it if nobody else is.  I just now registered the domain tulsasights.com (tulsapictures.com is taken by a squatter).  If you guys want me to go ahead and get a hosting plan, let me know.

This is a good site to download pictures on to post. It's own by Photobucket so there's no spamming with it. I've used them for years:

That maybe the best way to go, Jiminy. TulsaNow could even link to it, as broadcasting stations could as well.

Sounds good.  Does anybody have any input as to how much space we will need?  I'm thinking 1 gig to start.  I've found the webhosters that offer unlimited space and bandwidth for $5/mo are not the way to go... so I'm thinking of Liquidweb's basic plan for $15/mo.  I know TulsaNow is hosted on TulsaConnect and that would be nice, but unless their website is way out of date, their prices are not competitive.  Liquidweb has a great reputation and has plans that would let us grow if the site takes off.

I'm fairly good with HTML and PHP, but not so good at web design.  If someone has a mockup of a front page, I can implement it... otherwise, I'll probably use a template provided with one of the open source content management systems.  We'd probably use Coppermine as the photo gallery, or perhaps 4images, at least to start.

Any input?  Thoughts?  Am I getting ahead of myself?  I'm willing to cover the $15/mo to start, but if we need to upgrade, I might ask for voluntary help, or (gasp) put some ads on to cover the costs.  I'm absolutely not looking to make any money on it.

Yes, our website is quite out of date (and yes, we're working on a new one :)).  Drop us a line at sales@tulsaconnect.com and we'll make you a deal for the site hosting.

As far as space goes, are you going to allow high resolution images? If so, those files can easily exceed 3M. So, 1G would not be nearly enough. If you limit the files to 500K, then yes, 1G would probably be enough to get started. If you want full-on, high-rez shots, then I think 2-3G would be good to start.

Can somebody please tell me what the point of this site would be? Obviously, that Flickr group has a lot of images of live bands which I'm not sure was the original intention. But wouldn't it be easier to have the admin group put more restrictions on the group and delete images (or add moderators who can help)? With a photo website, not only is space a very important factor, but so is bandwidth.

+1
Restore the Flickr site to it's original purpose and shuffle the other content to side galleries.

Mainly the advantage would be having full control over the site, and having a dedicated domain.  It doesn't have be be limited to a picture gallery, we could put anything on it.

Unless I am missing something, those flikr pictures are all pretty small.  How do you see larger versions?  Could put all of those in a gig at that size.

Here's the best photo website "setup" I've found. It's also a good one to add to your favorites if your into photography.
