I understand Facebook has security issues, and supposedly asks for the password to an email account that it then uses to spam invites to people in your address book.
Anyone confirm or deny?

You can tell it to do a search on your contacts list through its database to see if anyone already has a Facebook account and it will add them to your friends list.

But what you are describing nothing like what I have had...

[edit]
I did find where you can invite contacts from your email account. let me illustrate the process:

  • Enter email address.
  • Enter password.

I would stop before giving them the password to my email account.  Sort of a red flag.

Exactly patric.  I simply don't use that feature and most people do not.

Artist - I hear what you mean about customizing your page to look nice.  The problem is not with what you would do with your page, it is that everyone else on myspace shows their personality by using crappy music on an animated background with flashing fonts and smilies all over the place.  God awful to say the least.

Myspace is a social networking cite, not really a place to 'show off' your web skillz.  But as far as it's purpose goes, it far exceeds myspace.  IMHO anyway.

Well being able to see that page with crappy music and flashing fonts and smiles all over the place is exactly what you want to be able to see. What better way to judge a person and their friends? If part of the point is to figure out what a person is like, what they show on their page, music and all, is a fantastic way to determine if they are the kind of person you would like to know or have as a friend....or not. If they have a bunch of crap on their page that you dont like, not likely to be someone you want as a friend. So being able to more readily see who they are is a great advantage. Its likely there are the same kinds of people on Facebook,,, you just have a more difficult time determining who they are. Myspace, often all it takes is one glance and you know lol. If its "social networking" your after, the more you know the better. And the quicker and more efficiently you can get an idea about who someone is, what they are about, the better.

A simple profile is usually not enough to piece together what a person is like. Often I have found that people can say the "right" things in a profile. Or one thing in a profile but then when you look a little closer and have more info to pull from you start getting a better picture, sometimes a completely different picture. I have learned a lot about that just from a certain chat/dating site I go to lol. For instance, If someone IM's me or wants to be a friend and the profile says " LTR oriented, looking for Long Term Relationship". Well I dont stop looking there, I look at their "hot list" and "friends list". If those are full of people with "parts" hanging out and profiles that say "looking for action/sex/play". I know the person IMing me is lying, or at best not at all the kind of person I would want as a friend or anything else. I often read a persons friends profiles to get an idea of what kind of person they are. People lie,,, a lot, even to themselves unfortunately. They often dont even know who they are.  I examine in detail the pics, whats in the background, every single word. The more info the better because your more likely to get a clearer idea of who the person really is.

With Facebook its like you have less than half the info to go on. Myspace appears to be sooo much more convenient. Sometimes all it takes is one glance and... "ok this person is a freak" nobody I want to have as a "friend" lol.  Or, hmmm interesting profile,,, says some neat things,,, now I want to find out more. What have we got here, whats this persons choice in images saying about them, how they have the page set up, the music, their choice in friends, etc....?

Perhaps I am looking at it from a different perspective.  I use Facebook to connect to people I already know.  I am not looking for random people with nice web pages to click the "add friend" button on.

Matter of opinion I suppose.  Most everyone I know is on Facebook at this point so that's what I would suggest.

I did a google search for "geek fight" to find a picture to best reflect this thread, but what I found was this and thought I'd share it instead:

That's assuming they are online at the same time as you.

I love facebook. I have a whole new audience to recycle my jokes to. I have been on since 2007 and have 250+ friends.

Be my friend.

I just don't care to share that much personal info on the internet.  Nothing to hide (that I know about), just not your need to know.

A friend offered me some space on his server for a personal web page.  I can't think of what I would want to put there for everyone in the world to know.

Will, facebook is taking over where myspace is dying, IMHO.  I have one of each.  I think facebook is "classier" if one can say such a thing.  Definitely more adults.

I like the idea of integrating Myspace, Facebook and Twitter into the Tulsanow homepage and forum, but I haven't really used those sites. What will they add to the forum and homepage? How would you use those sites in connection with Tulsanow?

If you have not used Myspace, Facebook, or Twitter and don't know how they will be used in connection with Tulsanow and the forum, how do you know you will like it? Just curious.

I am inclined to believe too much personal infomation will be required but I am willing to wait and see.

Twitter is basically a blog for those with ADD. It's meant for posting simple updates and notices. Facebook & Myspace allows people to associate themselves with their friends, causes, and businesses. All three are meant to allow another form of two-way communication between parties.

When websites integrate these, they are generally trying to move from a relationship where people "read" a website to more of a "participation" experience. Although many participate in the forum, the forum and the organization are not the same.
