I was still flying actively when they changed the class III from 2 to 3 years.

61.23:
Class 1 = 6 mo
Class 2 = 12 mo
Class 3 = 24 mo if age over 40
Class 3 = 36 mo if age under 40

Class 1 & 2 still degrade based on months since issue.

An age limit is ridiculous.

Some 70 year olds are alert, fit and healthy.  Others are decrepit and senile.  Look at the coach for the Steelers, the guy is 76 and most people would mistake him for 60.

Enforce the driving tests for all ages, maybe even add random testing and weight it to older drivers 'for safety' if you want to.  If any drivers has a certain number of moving violations test them to.  There has to be a better way than blanket taking away licenses because you hit an arbitrary age - having nothing to do with YOUR ability to drive.

and yes, taking away a license in Oklahoma is a social and work death sentence for most people.

I hope you mean the owner; the Steeler's head coach is the youngest in the NFL at 36.

Great article.  Thanks for the clarification.

I'll agree and go one step further.

This is where family steps up.  Don't make the government do your dirty work because you don't have the guts to confront elderly mom or dad and recommend they stop driving.  Or, notifying DPS that their driving needs to be evaluated.

Anyone in Oklahoma can report people who need to have their driving evaluated by the state, but you can not remain annonymous.  Now, you can't report someone who is tailgating you one day, but if you have knowledge of the person and feel they shouldn't be driving, contact DPS and they will tell you how to report.

What happens then?  I don't have anyone to report but just wondering how intrusive a prank this could be.

It was a very difficult thing to do to take my dad's keys away from him but we had to and he was only 64.  My mom stopped driving when she was 72 because she realized that she could not longer do so safely.  We did not need the state to do our work for us.

Forum Friends,

I had to take the keys away from my father when he was 77. It wasn't much of a struggle, however.

I moved him to Pryor a couple of years ago after Mom died.

The last few years that he did drive, he ran into ditches, curbs and lane dividers in South Tulsa. He whacked a curb on South Lewis once and drove home, about three miles, on two flat tires. He totalled two Silverados and pretty much destroyed an Explorer. His trucks had dents and bent wheels on every corner. And it was ALWAYS somebody else's fault.

I drove with him a few times after he moved to Pryor and it was white knuckle all the way. He had no sense that he was tail-gating and was absolutely a terror in the WalMart parking lot.

When I took his truck and keys away, I told him that I'd haul him wherever he needed to go, and he accepted this, but he didn't like it.

At the point in time when somebody else decides that I can't drive, I'm going to accept that decision. But I ain't gonna like it.

Regards,
Mike

Taking the keys away is a great act of love and a life saver. I support you for doing so, and your Mom is great she was responsable for herself and that is what everyone should do.. The problem is not everyone is that caring. Many older people drive and they even admit they should not be on the roads, but they drive anyhow. Our laws are lax when it comes to old age drivers..only a hand full of states have any extra testing and even at that it's not much, and people who fail can keep re-taking the test over & over- At age 70 most people are retired anyhow and don't need to drive to work. Driving is  skill best suited for  young people, fast reflexes, alert eyes and attentive behind the wheel. Those are all skills we lose as we age bit by bit. Sure anyone can steer a car, brake a car, and hit the gas, but can they do those things when it's needed most and at the right second? Drivers have to alert at all times, driving is a matter of life & death. Driving is a 100 percent activity, it requires full attention.

Hey gang, I was wondering what the pulse is here  about having a max. age limit for old drivers.

It would appear that the concensus here is not to have an arbitrary maximum age for drivers.
