What happens to old Drivers Licenses?

Ever wonder what the tag agency does with your old drivers license when you have to turn it in to get a new one?

Apparently some end up in the hands of  identity thieves, who use your legal (yet expired) license to print checks and other documents in your name.

I wonder what would happen if we started cutting our old Drivers Licenses up when we turn them in?
Could the tag agent refuse to give us a replacement license?

I know people who always conveniently "lose" theirs when it comes time to renew.

Why they sell them to illegal aliens, silly.

I thought they cut the old license in half and toss it into a shreader- Guess not in Oklahoma.[B)]

Did the DL have his SSN?

Red Arrow

When I renewed my license in 2007, they assigned a new operator number and removed my SSN.

Can they legally take your DL from you when you get a new one?? Like the poster above said, I would just conveniently lose mine when it came time to renew.

I was able to keep my first drivers license once I renewed it. I have only had to renew it once though.

Get ready in 2011 then, you'll get another new number...well, it's just your current number with a letter in front of it.  Not sure why they're doing that.

I kept mine, at the downtown tag agency they punch a hole through it, can't remember if where the hole was had relevance or not.  I didn't have to tell them I lost it I just said I wanted to keep it.

The one at 16th & Harvard made me surrender mine last time.
How did you get your license renewed without showing your old one?

I guess it all depends on the state. When I moved to Texas they let me keep my old out-of-state license. In Michigan when you re-new your license they cut off a corner and staple it to a re-newal card and then your new driver license comes in the mail in 3 weeks or so, don't know if it's still done that way or not. In Ohio as with most other states your drivers license is issued on the spot. In Texas your re-newal license comes in the mail and they give you a temp. license to use in the meantime. I dunno if it's still done like that or not. Oklahoma use-to use the SS number as your driver license number. In Ohio they removed the SS number from the license in 1996, before that the Ohio driver licenses had your SS number on it. In 2010 that "real ID" law starts and to re-new a license you have to show 5 pices of ID with proof of residence.
