Guido, we really missed you missing the facts....and We should realize that the United States represents less than 5% of the world. It will have to learn to play better with others.

Bush Administration's Tourist Visa Policy May Have Cost America The 2016 Olympics
http://thinkprogress.org/2009/10/02/chicago-olympics-bush/
" In spite of President Obama's lobbying efforts, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) may have chosen to reject hosting the 2016 summer olympic games in Chicago due to the post-9/11 visa tourist policies established by his predecessor, George W. Bush."

Rio made an excellent case the Summer Olympics should be in South America as its never been on their continent yet. Yet the Summer Olympics have been in North America held four times since 1968.  Mexico City - 1968 / Montreal - 1976 / Los Angeles - 1984 / Atlanta - 1996. How many times in Europe in the same period? Three and then the 2012 games in London.

Looks as though the decision was based upon diversity of venue and it was a good argument for Rio to make. A major city in Africa is likely to make a similar plea in the future and have a strong chance io win if the rest of their bid is good.

Back away from the knee jerk Bush blame. Visa policies viewed as too restrictive for citizens of other nations to travel to the USA could have been relaxed by the current Administration if it was that important to win the 2016 Olympics for Chicago in exchange for weakening security for the nation.

I read that the real reason the U.S. lost its edge in the Olympic bid was because of money. Apparently the U.S. networks ticked off the IOCC over previous Olympics about the share of television money.

And, hey, Rio's argument that Brazil needs to host the Games because the Olympics has never been hosted in the Southern Hemisphere is pretty compelling.

I find it strange that so many right-wingers, who are usually so "USA! USA! USA!" and rah-rah about patriotism, were celebrating the U.S. Olympic bid's failure. Do wingers hate America?  ???

Really? Where were the 2000 games held?

For the umteenth time, the answer is "YES". All wingers hate America. Jeez. Will you ever get it? That's the only possible reason people are gloating about the arrogant one's failure (I mean, other than racism obviously).

Speaking of gloating (only because aox linked to thinkprogress in a feeble attempt at blaming Bush for his audacity in trying to keep this country safe from terrorists):

Melbourne, Australia, 1956. Interestingly, Buenos Aires was runner up for the '56 games, and Chicago, Minneapolis, San Francisco, and Philadelphia were all eliminated in the first round.

Still, it is compelling that the games have never been held in South America, although they were held in Latin America -- Mexico City in 1968. Even so, 1956 and 1968 were a long time ago.

wow, thought you were educated.

MB said SOUTH AMERICA not the southern hemisphere, although someone else did.  But you quoted MB.

In your blind hatred of everything that has to do with our current president, you missed that little tidbit.

OK, you can return to Freeping now....
