Here's an article discussing the persons who Obama beat to win this award:

Kinda puts things in perspective.

NO, Guido. Obama earned the Prize by winning the moral high ground.

It's the place America always occupied. It helped Reagan end the cold war, and when Bush One summoned the world for the first Gulf War, it's the reason the entire world followed him.  It's the reason the entire world joined us in Afghanistan  after 9-11. And its what Bush II wiped his butt with, then flushed down the toilet with his ill-advised invasion of Iraq.

Before Bush II, the United States was the country that never started an unjust war. The country that never tortured,. The country that stood for peace and human rights. We were the unquestioned leader of the free world, and frankly, the free world liked it that way. Then when Bush II demanded the world follow us into Iraq, other countries, with good reason, questioned the wisdom of starting a war. And the Bush administration reacted like bullies.  They were like "who needs old Europe" and  "Freedom Fries".  The world  saw the US lie about Niger and Yellow Cake, open black prisons and commit atrocities at Abu Grabe.  They world thought we'd lost our way, and was frankly pleased, on election day, to see that the majority of us had not.

We elected the most moral man, and regained the Moral High Ground.  We elected the man who was not afraid to admit we screwed up, and set out to change it.

The criticism all comes from people who still believe Bush was right...people unswayed by the evidence he was not, who still think the Iraq war was a great idea and the French are fools for refusing to join the fight.  These are the people who ran the country for 8 years, and who were tossed out on their ear. These are people who don't respect the deomocratic decision, the election that put Obama in charge. Its not surprising that their reaction to the Nobel Peace prize is the same as the Taliban's. They have the same respect for democracy. Zero.  That's why they lost the moral high ground. That's why the world is rejoicing that they are no longer in control.

Bwahahahahahaha. How many U.S. soldiers has Obama sent into Afghanistan to kill those innocent civilians and Muslims? How many detainees has Obama allowed to be renditioned? How about those military tribunals he campaigned against? Those ended or do they all have access to U.S. courts? Also, what about that horrible idea W had about indefinite detention?

I cannot wait to see how the "world" will look at us when we increase our military presence in Afghanistan or drop a few bunker busters on Qom. We need to do both by the way as I think those are both in our interest.

Exit question:  Are you suggesting that Obama is more deserving than those in the article I posted?
Someone get Hoss a pacifier.

FOTD

Yes. He may not be "more deserving" but his change of direction in the perception of you and me by the rest the world is dramatic. It is a symbolic message by the committee to those who are kind to keep up the good fight. YOU may not like that.

The Weekly Standard doesn't know how to put ANYTHING in perspective.
Typical anti-Obama at all costs sour grapes from their partisan professionals.

First, Texas Gov. Rick Perry threatened to secede.... Hannity agrees...
http://www.newshounds.us/2009/04/18/secessionsympathizing_hannity_attacks_obamas_patriotism_suggests_he_should_be_investigated_by_dhs.php

Then, they cheered and celebrated when CHICAGO didn't get the Olympics......
http://tpmlivewire.talkingpointsmemo.com/2009/10/weekly-standard-newsroom-erupts-into-cheers-at-news-of-olympics.php

Now, The Weekly Standard/Rush/Beck etc, and their right wing activist media have demonstrated they actually HATE AMERICA (guess they only love America when they're in power).....
http://tpmdc.talkingpointsmemo.com/2009/10/right-wingers-pitch-fits-over-nobel-peace-prize.php

I met my hero; he was at a bar off 41st/Garnett a couple weeks ago...... came back from Iraq and is going to Afghanistan in another few weeks.  Tried to buy him a drink... instead he bought us all a shot of Jeger.

Didn't hear partisan BS from this guy; unlike the disgusting anti-Obama crap I get from typical oldfart right wing Republicans who think their party has somehow cornered the market on patriotism.  What a crock!

But wait..... there's more..... now how much would you pay?

Nelson Mandela Foundation
"We trust that this award will strengthen his commitment, as the leader of the most powerful nation in the world, to continue promoting peace and the eradication of poverty."

Kofi Annan
"It was an unexpected but inspired choice. In an increasingly challenging and volatile world, President Obama has given a sense of hope and optimism to millions around the world."

Marrti Ahtisaari, Nobel Peace Prize winner in 2008
"We do not yet have a peace in the Middle East ... this time it was very clear that they wanted to encourage Obama to move on these issues. This is a clear encouragement to do something on this issue; I wish him good luck."

Archbishop Desmond Tutu
"What wonderful recognition of someone who has already made such an impact on our planet with regards to the Muslim world, nuclear disarmament, climate change and, to some extent, the Middle East. He has reached out to the Arab world, including Iran, and North Korea.

In a way, it's an award - coming near the beginning of the first term of office of a relatively young President - that anticipates an even greater contribution towards making our world a safer place for all. It is an award that speaks to the promise of President Obama's message of hope."

Rebiya Kadeer, the Uighur leader who's often been tipped for the prize
"I am very happy that he got it. Now he has to do something with the award. It raises expectations on him to stand up for oppressed nations."

Zabihullah Mujahid, a Taliban spokesman
"He has done nothing for peace in Afghanistan ... We condemn the award of the Nobel Peace Prize for Obama."

Mohamed ElBaradei, director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency and 2005 winner of the Nobel Peace Prize
"I cannot think of anyone today more deserving of this honour ... President Obama has provided outstanding leadership on moving towards a world free of nuclear weapons."

Sami Abu Zuhri, a Hamas official
"Obama has a long way to go still and lots of work to do before he can deserve a reward. Obama only made promises and did not contribute any substance to world peace."

Saeb Erekat, chief Palestinian peace negotiator
"We hope that he will be able to achieve peace in the Middle East and achieve Israeli withdrawal to 1967 borders and establish an independent Palestinian state on 1967 borders, with Jerusalem as its capital."

Morgan Tsvangarai, Zimbabwe's prime minister, who was among those favoured for this year's prize
"I wish to congratulate President Obama. I think he is a deserving candidate."

Said Obama's uncle, who is in Kogelo, Kenya
"It is humbling for us as a family and we share in Barack's honour ... we congratulate him."

Ali Abkar Javanfekr, media aide to Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad
"We are not upset and we hope that by receiving this prize he will start taking practical steps to remove injustice in the world. If he removes the veto from the United Nations Security Council, then it shows the prize was given correctly to him."

Shimon Peres, Israel's president
"Under your leadership you have begun making peace a reality and making it a key issue on the agenda, which must be realized. From Jerusalem I express my confidence that the bells of understanding and dialogue between the nations will start ringing again."

JosÉ Manuel Barroso, European Commission President
"A tribute to President Obama's commitment to the values of peace and progress of humanity. This award is an encouragement for engagement by all those who can contribute to bring about a safer world."

Is that somehow worse than your disrespect of POTUS Bush and VPOTUS Cheney?

One will display respect for those that respect us....Dumbya and Cheeney had no respect for the truth or morals or the American citizen. Now corporations, MIC, and Iraqi oil they respected much to our chagrin.

And which special interests are getting the most respect from the sitting POTUS?
