My night at the Mayo

Because they offered a special rate for facebook friends and I promised to take my daughter to a hotel, we checked into the Mayo Hotel in downtown Tulsa tonight.

Check-in was quick and we immediately went to our room on the third floor. Our room faces east and we looked out over another of my favorite buildings, the Pythian at 5th and Boulder. The room was good sized with two double beds.

I really liked the feel of the room. It had a small kitchenette with fridge and microwave oven. The beds were high on pedestals and had high quality linens with gold threads and the Mayo logo throughtout the sheets, cover and pillows. The book in the room said the linens were made from organic eucalyptus wood pulp. They were soft. Each bed had a gold leatherlike bench that was just the size for my seven year old to use as a desk for drawing.

The television is enormous and the art very tasteful. I like the parchment colored walls and the dark hard woods throughout. The closets were big and the bathroom spacious. I like that they have included marble everywhere, including the window sill. Everything was modern, but it felt very soft and comfortable. I really like the high ceilings and the ceiling fan. I am trying to think if I have ever been in a hotel room with a ceiling fan before.

We went up to the Crystal Ballroom at exactly sunset and just stood in awe of the view. I had my senior prom over 30 years ago and have to say that the room looks great. The occupancy sign says 300, but it looked like it could hold more. It is truly one of the most spectacular rooms in all of Tulsa.

We had dinner elsewhere, but are looking forward to getting room service french toast in the morning. The wireless internet is free and fast and the TV has 60 plus channels.
We parked on Cheyenne right next to the hotel, but they also offered valet service.

I'll write more after a night's sleep...

more babble...

I couldn't reach the high ceiling fans to adjust the speed or leave it on without the light being on. It would have been nice to have a light movement of air while sleeping. The room stayed good and warm, even near the window, while it goit down to freezing outside. The room was fairly quiet compared to some other hotels I have been in, but I could still hear things going on in the hallway.

We ordered room service french toast for my daughter as a splurge ($15) and her reaction was worth it this one time. It was true french bread that had been battered with cinnamon, fried and sprinkled with powdered sugar. It also came with real maple syrup. I was impressed that it arrived at the door in 12 minutes.

The shower had water coming at me in three locations and it took a while to figure out how to change the settings. The shower is the size of a big closet and was really nice. They included environmentally friendly packaging shampoo and others and the towels were high quality as well. The coffee maker had little packets of Topeca coffee but we didn't drink any.

Overall, I loved the place. I would highly recommend it for anyone staying downtown.

Do they have any embroidered towels worth stealing?

RecycleMichael

The towels were not embroidered. The robes, however...

Thanks for the review, my anniversary is Monday, and I have been thinking about a stay at the Mayo.   Sounds really nice.

I know you probably don't know - we are almost always in large pickups (4 door cabs, back of the truck stuffed with Junque)  and often have problems at downtown hotels.  Do they have a garage for their valet parking, or do they use streetside for larger vehicles?

I'm going to a wedding reception in the ballroom this spring, really looking forward to seeing it.

Yes, they offer indoor valet parking in the Mayo parking garage across the street.

I saw that an hour after I posted.  Looks like it would work, just have to take the antennas off the roof.  (There is a reason they call our trucks a fleet of tuna trawlers)

Thanks
