I'm not an experts, but it looks like something should be at the top:

If whatever is missing isn't going to be replaced, why not put a RT66 logo or clock up there?

I believe that is exactly what it is missing.

I was told that city wanted to put the clocks at the top, but it would have added considerably more to the price tag than what was available in the budget. It is hoped that clocks will be installed sometime later.

The original clocks were already gone when the original framework was dismantled, and their whereabouts are unknown.

I would say Meadow Gold is missing. The company that is.  :P

I always questioned why we spent hundreds of thousands of dollars putting back up a sign promoting a company started in Nebraska and headquartered in Dallas.

We could have rearranged the letters so we wouldn't promote them but keep the sign.

I suggest "EGAD MOD OWL!"

Honestly?  I've always thought the super-structure the signs are mounted to is totally garish.  It's about as attractive as looking down a street lined with main feed overhead powerlines on both sides.

Speaking as someone old enough to fully remember the original installation, the clocks are exactly what is missing.  I would hope the clocks will eventually be restored, but I am thankfull that the sign has been saved in its present incarnation, clocks or not.
