Anyone else looking into this?  I have to admit the first piece of Apple equipment I've owned was my iPhone but I've come to appreciate Apple via that device and my daughter's MacBook Pro.  I'm blown away with all the functions of the iPhone, it's only limitations to me is the screen size for reading.

Also Sgrizzle, Townsend said you had an iPhone app for TNF, I'd love to get my hands on that, por favor.

Well, you know, other than that whole bit about being able to run any software you like on it. Or multitask. Or play Flash.

Give me flash and a jailbreak and I might actually consider it. It's a form factor I've been thinking about for years.

I've heard that some people were turned off by the fact that the apps were essentially stretched out versions of the iPhone apps.  I'm sure those will get updated in time, but 500-700 dollars for a giant iPhone?

Color me meh.  I'm waiting for June so I can get an iPhone.  Just so I can be one of those people at events/hockey games who has their head down the entire time browsing.   ;D  I'm actually thinking about an iTouch instead.  Lot's of free public wifi out there....

There's also plenty of apps for smartphones to turn them into wifi hotspots. ;)

I've never owned an Apple product, but this one is making me think about it.  My wife's laptop is old and starting to have problems.  The iPad would do everything she wants, ....  except the 'no Flash' might be an issue.

I won't own an iPhone (and I do want one) until service spreads to other carriers.  Not a fan of AT&T.

Yes, highly unfortunate. If it was a real computer like most netbooks, it would be a great device. It needs a USB on the go port, a couple of media slots (SD, CF, whatever), Flash, upnp for media streaming, and a few other things, like the ability to install apps from third parties that didn't go through the app store. (I have no problem with the app store as an option, but I shouldn't be forced to go through it)

The hardware looks great.

Despite lots of trying, there is no TulsaNow forum iPhone app. If you add it as a bookmark to your home screen, you do get a nifty icon, however.

While the app store was a hinderence when it first came out but the sheer volume of apps, the expediency in which they come out (You can download an app today, written with the SDK released yesterday) means the app store is perfectly fine for 99% of users. Jailbreaking, in my experience has more problems than it's worth. I've tried it and it works about as well as you think an OS coded by a 14yr old in his mom's basement should work. I have a friend who's phone is currently a paperweight due to jailbreaking.

Coming from the Apple IIe, and Mac 2gs days, I was never an apple fanboy but their recent stuff is pretty awe inspiring.

That being said, I likely won't get an iPad, at least not right away. Like Wilbur, my wife wants one and it would suit her well, but it's not unique enough of a device for me to run out and get one. I predict the iPad will be great in future hardware/software revisions but not yet. Apple has filed for a lot of patents and is working no a lot of contracts for media that, if they come together, will make the DVR seem like a VCR.

There is an adapter for devices like your camera for importing pictures, but keep in mind that while the iPad can fly solo, it seems more aimed as a partner to a desktop PC.

I agree with this completely. I think the iPad has a ton of potential utility that has enormous implications for the future of computers and mobile technology.

The situation now sort of reminds me of the apps for the iPhone. That was the big X factor that didn't get much attention at first, but quickly made iPhone really useful and is making the other cell makers and providers scrambling in vain to keep up.

Hmmm, interesting stuff.  One of the lines I represent utilizes touch-screen technology for PLC-type applications so I get kind of excited about it even though more than half of it makes little sense to me, I'm just not much of a tech geek.  One of these touch screen units replaced several older style PLC's plus analog recording equipment including a chart recorder (2nd photo).

Sounds like the iPad is something I'll probably take a wait and see approach on unless I can justify it in a business context.  I'm sure this will be on my daughter's birthday and Xmas lists this year.  "But Daddy..." Did I ever mention they both have long, dramatic eyelashes, and they know it?  ::)
