Email I received from Donna Keffer, Director of Sales at the Mayo:

Currently we are only doing private parties out of The Penthouse and we are able to serve food. The patio was just completed last month.

Yes there are plans to open The Penthouse to the public. Unfortunately, we do not have a date to open just yet.

The Mayo's rooftop penthouse is open to the public Thursday-Saturday from 5pm-2am, per their facebook. Apparently it's been open for a month or two, at least. Not sure how I missed this news.

I'm there, ASAP!!!

They have some photos of the penthouse on their facebook. The joint looks way too classy for the likes of me.

It's a good place.  They do a nice job of mixing drinks there.  We watched the fireworks July 4th.

Good views.

The elevators are unlocked to go to penthouse so you don't need a key anymore.

Also on the bars topic, Elote was packed last night. It was great to walk down that street at midnight on a weeknight and see dozens of people. With Elote, Mod's and the new hotel, Boston is alive again. A couple years ago, you would've been standing on Boston from midnight until until after daybreak trying to count a couple dozen people.

Unfortunately, they had the whole sidewalk roped off for their beer garden. Great to see people out and about, but it's not so great trying to walk down the street when a business has comandeered the entire sidewalk. Even during normal evening hours, it's somewhat difficult to walk through Elote's patio. I imagine the disabled would have a very tough time navigating that.

This is where the poor streetscaping on Boston really hurts. Instead of creating plenty of room for pedestrians while  still maintaining adequate room for cars, we had to keep four driving lanes plus two parking lanes. Apparently whoever made that decision was a time traveler from the 1950s.

Same thing in Brookside.  I agree though, nice to see Boston alive again.  Now if only they can get something to go in the old Jave Dave's space in the Philtower.  Something that is open late.

That kind of thing seems very Dallas-like. Hopefully we learn the error of their ways and start taking cues on urbanity from places better than OKC and Dallas.

Even their most urban areas are pretty poor. McKinney Ave is very crowded to make room for lots of cars rather than making room for people in one tiny sliver of that giant metroplex. It's downright frightening at times to try to walk down that street with a narrow sidewalk and cars two feet away. Surprised I haven't heard of any drunks plowing into a patio full of bar patrons.

Elote was packed for a long time last night. I completely agree about them commandeering the sidewalk. I thought the same thing the first time I went to one of the luchador matches. I understand that there's not much else going on that late on Boston, but you can't just block off an entire sidewalk like that. And with Nate there last night, it's clear that it can be a real problem for those in wheelchairs.

And I really wish that we would narrow a lot of our streets, widen the sidewalks and add more trees. Our sidewalks are more like an occasional afterthought instead of designed with intention and focus on being GREAT sidewalks. Read Jane Jacobs's chapters on the importance of sidewalks in the Death and Life of Great American Cities. It will really underscore a lot of the things we've been talking about.

On another note, I'd like to see Elote get the second floor of the building and add a viewing balcony overlooking the wrestling wring. It'd be a great place for parties and they don't have to have it open all the time, but on match nights, it'd be great to have.

It's illegal for them to block the sidewalk, per ADA you at least have to have a 4 ft. clear walkway through.  Maybe they should move into the parallel parking area.  Put some planters in around the perimeter to cushion the seating area from parked cars and you could have a cozy outdoor seating area.

What's up there now, empty office space? That would be cool if they could add an upstairs area.

Not sure the walkway is four feet when they just have the usual tables and chairs setup out there. The sidewalk's not really wide enough for outside seating.

Good thing we kept that four lanes of traffic plus two parking lanes.

Good thing we kept that four lanes of traffic plus two parking lanes.

I remember one of the re-design concepts for Boston provided for wide sidewalks with a reduction in vehicle lanes.  That concept went away fast thanks to the entrenched mindset that defers to vehicular travel everywhere.  It's truly unfortunate and as we are beginning to experience and will continue to experience as downtown returns it was short-sighted.

We got it right with Main St.'s redesign fortunately and there are other streets downtown that have wide sidewalks.  I hope that as we redo many of our other streets we'll think about all the many enjoyable and necessary things that can/should be accommodated on city streets.

I'd be very interested in the Mayo Penthouse, too. Anybody got any further info?

I went to the Mayo rooftop bar this past weekend.  Nice place with rooftop patio seating, though there could be more tables.  Just walk in the lobby and take the elevator to the top floor.  It was open until 2 am.

Wonder if they'll let me bring my camera....
