Boston Ave businesses downtown

Mod's Coffee and Crepes in the old Kokoa space on Boston looks to be opening soon. Gelato and smoothies, too. Apparently it's owned by the former Collective owner.

Across the street, Elote has been advertising their new bar. Is this a bar open normal bar hours, or is it just open until 10pm or whatever? Anybody been here and have any opinions?

A block north, the new hotel in the Atlas Life is opening soon. Hopefully this leads to more evening/weekend life and maybe some Atlas Grill nights/weekend hours. Anybody heard anything?

The folks opening Mod's also are tied in with the Bed & Breakfast on 21st by Woodward Park.  Mother/son I believe.

Elote is only open until 10p.

I haven't heard any word on how late Atlas is going to be open.  You could always join the Press Club across the way from Atlas Grill for late night drinks.

There were definitely several people sitting at the bar at Elote after midnight last night, but I was kind of in a hurry and didn't stop and check it out.

Answered my own question. Open 'til 2am with Mexican wrestling, even.

On May 5, Auld will add about 1,500 square feet to the estimated 3,000-square-foot Mexican restaurant, featuring a 16-foot-long eco- friendly bar and a 10-foot Luchador wrestling ring.

By extending Elote's hours to 2 a.m. Wednesday through Saturday nights, Auld hopes to become the first successful skyscraper district restaurant in many years to provide early morning service.

Greetings friends. The owner of Mod's is Rusty Rowe. He was the owner of The Collective and is the son of the bed and breakfast owners. After The Collective closed, I approached Rusty about working with me at Joe Momma's until we could open a concept together. I thought The Collective was a great place and loved his enthusiasm as much as his concept. While Rusty was with me at Joe Momma's, we worked together to create a new concept on 6th street and even signed a lease for the space on the southeast corner of 6th and Peoria.

During that time the space on Boston, which was already mostly built out became available. We changed plans a bit and I encouraged Rusty to go it on his own. He came up with the crepe concept and I think it's great. I just talked with him this afternoon and it's my understanding that they should be open in a little over a month. They're going to serve crepes. They'll be made right there in front of you like this:

I love what Libby has done with Elote and I think Rusty will bring a fresh concept and a very cool product to an increasingly cool Boston Ave.

I encourage you all to check it out and support his endeavor...as well as Libby's new very cool bar.

It's fun to watch our downtown grow up before our eyes. We just have to remember to keep supporting the entrepreneurs who are making it happen.

By the way, if you're not at Mayfest or the Blue Dome Festival, you're missing out.

I don't think staying open until 2 a.m. was ever part of their plan. Their website lists closing time as 10 p.m.

I've been there after midnight in the past few weeks. The article farther up in this thread says their bar is open 'til 2am several days. Unfortunately, they couldn't serve even chips when I went there. Bar only.

Regardless of what they settle on, somebody other than Mr. Joe Momma needs to serve an actual full menu past 10pm.

If a business is unable to keep predictable hours, I'm not going to count on them being open when I want to visit. I'll go somewhere that I'm fairly certain will be open.

I don't know anything about running a business, but as a customer, a business staying open until a pre-specified time on each day may lose money some nights, but it buys a lot of goodwill. I'm not gonna call before I visit every time, and I'm not gonna waste my time visiting a business that may or may not be open.

If a business wants my money, don't make it difficult for me. Elote may still be ironing things out but they need to settle on some hours, update their website, and keep those hours unless there's a blizzard or something.

So they tried the late bar hours for what, a month, maybe six weeks? This seems to happen nonstop with downtown businesses, trying late hours for a period of time insufficient to make any determinations. And during that time, they probably closed early half the time due to lack of business.

You wouldn't open up a new restaurant, then go out of business a month later because you're not making money. I don't see how they can try late hours, then drop them before most people even know about them. There was almost zero publicity they were open late in the first place.

That article makes it appear that they close at 10pm, save for the two Thursdays a month. I saw they weren't open late one night last weekend. If they are actually open past 10pm most weekends, I stand corrected. I'm basing my criticism off that TW article. Regardless, they need to serve at least chips after 10pm. Maybe a couple appetizers, too.

A restaurant closing at 10pm on a Saturday night, to me, is still pretty terrible. That's not acceptable in a city that draws young people. How many restaurants in entertainment areas of Portland, Chicago, NYC close at 10pm on a Saturday night? Closing at 10pm is not even acceptable in an average college town.

I'm a night owl. I spend the majority of my time out and about after 10pm. It seems I spend a good amount of energy attempting to visit restaurants and bars that have either decided to close early for the night or changed their hours for the worse and failed to update their websites for months.

I love visiting other cities and not having to watch the clock to figure out my dining. There will be something to eat when I want to eat. Here, that's not the case at all. I barely get to Joe Momma's before their midnight closing time a lot of times. Their business at that hour seems to have grown over time. It's frequently pretty busy at 11:45pm nowadays. Nobody else downtown is even willing to give late hours enough of a chance to find out if they'll work. A month or two is not enough time to make a determination.
