Last Minute Vacation Ideas

Family found itself with six days off this week. Any ideas?

Kansas City is always a good vacation spot. The Royals are in town, my kids love the indoor water park WolfCreek Lodge, and I love the BBQ. I think the Nelson-Atkins is a great museum and my wife thinks the Costco store is worth the drive. I found rooms at the Holiday Inn across the street from the Plaza for under $100.

My family is going to New Orleans in a couple of weeks. I found rooms at the Hilton Garden Inn French Quarter for $66 a night. It has a pool on the roof eighteen stories high with a great view of the city. We are also doing historical tours, swamp rides on an airboat, and buying voodoo dolls for everybody who argues with me on this forum.

Thanks RM. We already have a three day trip to KC later this month. Will take your advice at that time.

As for New Orleans, I was there two months ago in the quarter. Have fun.

San Antonio is only a day's drive.  They have the waterfront.  There are several fun things like the water parks in the area.  I've only been through SA on my way to Uvalde.  It's about 500 mi by car.  You could also go to OKC and then take the Amtrak ride to SA.  That would be a different trip.

St. Louis is a beautiful 6 hour drive through some great landscape.  Stay downtown near the old Union Station (mall now).  Hit Six Flags, Budweiser, Soulard Market http://www.soulardmarket.com/ (the oldest operating farmer's market in the US), Grant's Farm, Forrest Park (art museum, history museum, science museum).

Perfect 6 days.

We love St. Louis. Last summer we stayed at the hotel you mentioned. My wife loved having a hotel that was part of a shopping mall. We had dinner at Rigazzi's on the hill and took the kids to the City Museum (the most bizarre kids attraction in America). If you don't take the kids, stay at the Casino Queen. It is very affordable and has a great view of the downtown skyline. Grant's Farm is very fun and I loved the fence made from old civil war rifles.

Rigazzi's is good.  Also try Mama Campisi's.  Start with the combo appetizer platter.  Shaw gardens is right down the road from The Hill. It's IMO the best botanical garden in the US.  You can spend an entire day there.  Buy a bottle of good wine and walk the gardens with it (kind of a tradition).
