If you have ever driven across or wanted to, it has come to an end. The road across Hoover Dam will be closed permanently in the next two weeks, as the Hoover Dam bypass is opened. The road across the dam will be closed on both the Arizona and Neveda sides permanently. Part of the closure is a result of 9/11, the other reason is the amount of traffic over the dam. I had my first trip across the dam both ways in 1985, and my last was Januarary 2009 that I actually drove across the dam.

Sad. Luckily, I've had occasion to drive over the dam a couple of times in the past when I had some business in Kingman.

It's not just the dam itself that's interesting, but the terrain and the various dam-related buildings scattered along the road nearby are pretty interesting, too. It's nice that the trip won't have to take so long when traffic is heavy, but it's a real shame that the old road will be completely closed.
