The photos make me wonder about the article saying they were painting over the mural and Crowne Plaza logos

Is it just me or is the Crowne plaza logo a sign?

Photo gives you an idea about how large that mural actually was.  Them was some BIG flowers and a BIG bird.

Big for sure.

When you paint something that big, do you have to stand back a bit to make sure everything is right or do you have the ability to stay up close, like on the scaffolding/ladder, and still "see" the finished product?  That's something I've always wanted to know about sign painters and artists that do huge projects like that.

That is too bad.  Maybe the murals can be recreated somewhere else?

I still wish someway, somehow Main could go north of 3rd to connect to 1st and the bridge to Brady.  I realize that would mean tearing down that section of the Crown Plaz.. er Hyatt and the Williams Forum but it would really improve connectivity downtown.  If there was anyone who could make this happen it would be Kaiser and he now owns both buildings...

Even just a pedestrian-only connection would be better than nothing, some type of system of tunnels/skywalks/corridors that's open 24/7. It's quite annoying trying to walk from the center of downtown to the Brady District.

Must have been seeing this.... The sign was gone and what was left was being painted over.

Again, gives you an idea of how large the mural actually was.

Btw.  I have been asked to give a quote on what it would take to repaint the mural.  Just a shame I couldn't have taped off or had them paint everything but right close to the mural and let me paint around it.  I would have done it for free in order to save it.  Its going to be a lot of work to repaint the whole thing all at once.  Its NO fun painting outside, up on a wall like that lol.  As for perspective and scale, some smaller parts I can actually draw an outline on paper and trace that onto the wall.  For larger items I take my photoshop image and put lines over it, then put those same lines to scale on the wall with a chalk line, and can also "count bricks", aka. I could look at the image on my sheet of paper and see that the tip of the birds beak is 2 bricks over and 2 bricks up from its base, then connect the points, that sort of thing.

OSHA would love to see that photo on the right with the guy leaning way left of his ladder.

Did you happen to read the comments on the KOTV site?  Some dipshit called the work "amateurish".  I'm just guessing there's maybe 10 people in this town, if that, who could have pulled off what you did.

Thanks for the defense, but I am sure there are a lot of artists in this town who could do what I did.  The trick can sometimes be finding someone who will do it for the price I did it for lol, and or who will reliably show up (I have worked with other artists and some tend to not be all that reliable or trustworthy,,,talented, but could use more discipline.  Sometimes its not about having super talent, but showing up and reliably doing a good job on time and on budget) and or would be willing to climb around up that high in the weather lol.

"Amateurish"?  apparently the commenter had no idea of the process.  I didn't create the artwork (except for the bird), I took other artists artwork and added that to the mural.  Unless the guy thought my arrangement choices were amateurish lol.  For instance the fun kite was taken from the 2007 Mayfest Poster by Gailard Sartain.  http://www.tulsaworld.com/news/article.aspx?articleID=070509_1_A2_LENWo24808  I don't know how I could have painted the kite on there in a less "amateurish" way? (and I have painted the kite twice for the first larger version itself was painted over when they painted the building red) Did my kite really look that different from the original? The little kids I took from this years poster,,, I added a lot more detail to them than was in the painting for they were tiny in the poster and could not have a lot of detail. And I thought I did quite well considering their faces had to be painted on bricks lol.  But anyway, I doubt the commenter had any idea of what the process for the creation of the mural was.  Plus, the idea was that it would never really be done but would, hopefully, continue to be added to year after year until it became one massive mural, covering the whole wall and containing parts from many years past.  If they would quit painting over the danged thing lol.

Scaffolding...lots of scaffolding....or at least 4 or 5.

...cheaply rented by the month.

TheArtist,
Have you ever used a projector for the line tracing outline part?  Not sure it would work on something that big....??  Works pretty good on car, bus, wall application.

I don't share my thoughts because I think it will change the minds of people who think differently.  I share my thoughts to show the people who already think like me that they are not alone.
