...that nathanm's cruising Holland Hall?

I think you were the one with a family connection to HH. I did not know until yesterday that HH does not make up snow days. Apparently they pile up the school work--along with blog posting homework assignments on snow days.

But I guess I am from the old school that snow should not result in a free week's vacation for the kids and public employees (I see on social networks numerous teachers celebrating snow days).

They've gotta make all but 3 up sometime this year in TPS.

Yes, the wife.

She doesn't remember snow days.  She remembers alot of kids getting there when they could get there but she def remembers going in snow.

Then you should know that my kids' lives were not endangered by going to school. Neither would the lives of kids going to Jenks and Bixby. I am middle aged (not an old fuddy whatever by any means). But I guess I am from the old school that snow should not result in a free week's vacation for the kids and public employees (I see on social networks numerous teachers celebrating snow days). I cannot recall ever having more than three snow days in a row off of school when I was a kid. How about you Red? joeie?

As for driving by HH, I advise you not to do so between 2:30-3:30. It will be a clusterf**k of mammoth proportions.

CUST:  I have no experience with school bus drivers, or their driving issues, as I don't have any use for buses. But if they are that bad, why do parent's allow their kids to get on board in good weather? Are these parents not endangering their safety by exposing them to a known risk?

My daughter had a teacher at Jenks give what seems most reasonable as the real scoop about why snow days are so much more common now.

The schools are really strapped for cash as everyone knows, they need every dime they can get.

Jenks knows that in the past in bad weather absenteeism was always much higher than normal. But the state gives the schools money based on Average Daily Attendance (ADA).

Snow days don't cost the district anything because they just make the time up later so they don't count against ADA. So if the district can get a higher attendance rate by canceling school now and having an extra day later in the year than they would during a snow event, then the district will have a higher ADA and get more money from the state.

Very informative.

And look!  It's not the damn facebookin', hot-chocolate-sippin', snuggie-wearin', couch-sittin' public school teachers taking the opportunity to keep our children from their learnin' for a full week.  For once they're relatively blameless!

I don't remember more than a couple of days in a row.  A couple of years we had to make up days.  The biggest single snow I remember was 18".  We hardly ever got off for less than about 8" of snow as I remember but it was a long time ago.  We didn't get much in the way of ice storms like we get around here.

There is a lot more snow in SE Penna than around here.  The communitites there spend a lot more on snow removal equipment, materials and personnel.  How much money do we want to spend here to be ready to clear a record snow in hours instead of a couple of days?

It's amazing how much traffic increases/decreases depending on whether school is open or not.  I'd just as soon not have the extra traffic when the roads are bad.

Great!  Now it's a winter weather warning.  I am going to be trying to land back in Tulsa just as the storm picks up at about 8:pm.

Wasn't much difference between the watch and the warning aside from the fact that the models started to tighten up a little.  Well, maybe not so much as the NAMs 12z snowfall estimate shows 14-18 inches, but the GFS is showing 4-8.  NWS split the difference a little and did some fudging and have it down to about 8 inches now.

Ok...waiting for the juvenile response(s) in regards to measurement.  I bet I know who will be first.

A couple of days? It's been a week and the Tulsa area is still reeling. Still, your point is well taken. However, I never thought I would find myself having to stay at a hotel at the airport out of fear of poor road conditions just so I could be sure to make a flight.

I went to Jenks from 6th through 9th and lived on a steep and slick hill (Toledo between 82nd & 85th) and took the bus to school every day as my house was about 6-7 miles from the central campus.  They have alternate snow routes for buses.  IIRC, I think the most we ever had was two days off.  The big issue they had was making sure buses weren't sliding down hills and that the main roads were clear and safe.  JPS was probably also about 1/3 to 1/2 the size it is now.
