I don't expect any sympathy about the price of Avgas but maybe you can feel better about paying $3.35/gal of regular.

Makes a Mogas conversion almost sound like a good idea.

Unfortunately many/most planes do not qualify.  I think only planes that used 80/87 qualify.  There are also issues with altitude for higher performance planes due to vapor pressure of the gasoline.  Car gas also gums out if not used relatively quickly.  Car gas with ethanol is a no-go, even at 10%.  I believe it is a corrosion and gasket/o-ring issue.  There's a lot more to it than just putting car gas in your plane.

Having said that, there are a lot of planes where it works just fine.

Notice I said "almost".

How costly is the STC to do the conversion on a standard 4 cylinder Lycoming or Continental?

JetA has always been cheaper than 100LL (or blue gold as we started calling it when my friend and I were doing a bit of flying three or four years ago).  Not by much, but it is cheaper.  JetA is essentially kerosene.

I'm just a Mechanical Engineer.  The only reason I can (almost) afford to fly is that I have no kids or ex/present wife.

Thanks but I'll pass.

If I have a sudden urge to have one, I'll go to WalMart.  I see them being pushed around in the carts like groceries all the time.  I need to ask which aisle they are on though since  I only see them in the carts.

But I'll only do that if Wal-Mart promises to honor their return policy for defects.

you have to prove it was a manufactures defect and not user error

I believe the policy is that all children are guaranteed to have defects.

I had to take one to a mechanic yesterday to get a faulty appendix removed.  ;)

There you are, defects guaranteed.

Edit: I hope the mechanic and kid did alright.

Damned amazing.  She hadn't felt good for a week and went into full-blown pain about 2am Sunday morning.  Took 10 1/2 hours to get her seen and properly diagnosed, 12 hours until she was on the table.  She can go back to school tomorrow if she feels up to it. Back to competition cheer practice next week.

20 years ago, that would put you on your back for at least a week or longer.  IIRC, a friend had his appendix out 20 or 22 years ago and he was off work two weeks.  That's when they'd lay you open for such a procedure.

She's had a rough month.  She had a cheer accident a few weeks back and broke her nose and got a minor concussion.  She's promised no more hospital time...ever.
