Several of the old facilities still use water box fans and have no plans on putting in central a.c. because of the cost. It's a roll of the dice where Lexington intake sends you. The main thing they try to do is send you as far away from your home in order to not have to deal with family visits. You get closer to home as your sentence nears its end.

As for the luxury of clothing. All your clothes are washed twice a week in a nylon bag barely large enough for all your clothes and washed with hundreds of bags at a time and full drying is never achieved.
The sores that are accompanied with such process is blamed on possible spider bites. But almost always turns out to be staph infection.

A lot of the facilities try and be self sufficient and have a garden which the inmates work year round. Three meals a day and a limited commissary are the choices. Food cooked is usually high in carbohydrates and starches. Most inmates will pack on the pounds while incarcerated, giving the impression of living comfortably.

All inmates have a job. They all are assigned after assessment is done over the first few weeks at the yard. The higher risk inmates will stay and work on the yard or kitchen. The lower risk inmates usually get a outside job with seven to ten men on a crew. Most inmates want these jobs but are subject to more strip searches for obvious reasons.

If you have issues such as needing Eye glasses, they will be provided to you and most all of them black frame plastic to cut down on possible replacements. You have to be in the system at least six months to be looked at for Dental care. And even after that it could take up to six months to a year to finally get the treatment because of the long back log of patients.

They also provide three months of good time to your sentence if you enroll in and pass the GED course. It almost always takes several months to get into the class because of the long list of enrolled inmates. Not all yards offer the GED course so you may end up having to wait for a bed at another facility to get transfered to and that also takes time.

Doesn't sound like they are being treated to first class hotel acommodations as many might believe. Reminds me of when I worked a strike at a Louisiana refinery in my youth. We worked 12 hour shifts, bunked in offices stacked like submariners, ate rice and beans with a side of rice and beans, showered as a group, ate as a group and did dangerous work. We got pretty good medical though. Meanwhile the union guys were partying outside the gates.

As an aside, those "water boxes" work pretty well. Growing up in the 50's we had water coolers that felt dang good when the hot Okie summers arrived with a vengeance. Even the downtown office buildings had them. Of course the humidity was tough on everything but it made life bearable.

Those are called "Swamp Coolers"......

No doubt. You know what they called the lowest workers at the refinery? Swampers. They were the guys who were sent back into the swamp to retrieve left behind tools. One armed guys usually. ;)

The inmates would be outside turning big rocks into small rocks if I was King. I believe in prison labor camps. After a 12 hour day of toil the inmates would be too tired to riot and fight as a bonus. There would be no A/C, gyms, or any other perks, prison would be a place you'd want to avoid at all costs. The revolving door of prison would slow down a bit....BTW, They say that guy in the Oslo shootings will be in the worlds most luxury prison, complete with private plasma TV sets in each room, pool, gyms, tennis courts, the works in the lap of good living with a full menu mess hall.. The photo's I seen of the "prison"   look like a resort and the guards are mostly good looking Ladies, the max. sentence is 21 years no matter the crime. Totally unreal. If you must do a crime and can do the time Norway is the place to do it..

And oddly enough, they have a much lower recidivism rate than the US.

Oh ya the fun of weed eating county areas and picking up citizens trash along the Highway or chopping wood in a area you just cut down and cleared.
Or the time spent in a week to build a barbed wire fence for a citizen that applied for and got free labor to have it done for him.
Clearing out storm drains and helping lay asphalt for miles of County roads, not to mention filling pot holes as they arise.
Helping with clearing ditches or getting rid of Beaver Dams on Citizens ponds or clearing snow and ice from County parking lots.
Not to mention that County Cemeteries need to be kept up with mowing and weed eating.

Ya I guess it has gotten so much better than the old Black and White striped uniform day's of slaving in the hot sun chained together "Cool Hand Luke" style of incarceration, breaking them rocks and making Auto Licence plates, All the while singing "Camp Town Ladies" with only bread and water at the end of the day waiting for you.
Changing opinions one mistake at a time.

Dolfan, you seem to have a pretty good grasp on what the prison duties are...personal experience speaking?  8)

Well we're not 100% sure what he's referring to as "bon bons".
