TULSA - Development continues to boom in west Tulsa.

In less than a week a major retailer will hold its grand opening, and it's bringing a wave of new businesses.

Sam's Club will open next Wednesday night.

"I just can't believe it's exploded to being this big," said John Harper, the chair of the Southwest Tulsa Chamber of Commerce.

Harper said the Tulsa Hills Shopping Center is bringing new opportunities to the area daily.

"It has exceeded all of anybody's expectations I believe," said Harper.

Already announced, and opening soon are a Cracker Barrel, a car wash, Staples, Dick's Sporting Goods and of course, Sam's Club.

"I think they chose this market correctly and we were in dire need over here for something like that," said Harper.

West Tulsa residents Dale and Pat Johnson agree.

"Long past due to have something like this on this side of town, we haven't had any shopping places on the west side in years," said Dale Johnson.

They make a point to stop by Tulsa Hills regularly.

"Probably about three times a week," said Johnson.

They're always on the look-out for new shops.

"I noticed that they've started another building just down the road, I don't know what it's going to be, they haven't got a sign out yet. We're all kind of curious," said Johnson.

That building could be a variety of newly announced additions that haven't advertised just yet.

According to Harper, a Jiffy Lube, Hideaway Pizza, Panera Bread and the Flying Burrito Company are on the way.

The new businesses are also bringing more housing to the area. Along with new homes, the Nickel Creek apartment complex is working to add more than 100 units.

"I've lived in west Tulsa all my life and never imagined, I can remember this being wooded, and so to see it finally coming along," said Harper.

The Southwest Tulsa Chamber says a couple of QuikTrips are also moving to the area.  One is expected to be across from Tulsa Hills.

No, that was Atomic Burrito and it's now a Qdoba.  FAIK, the 37th & Peoria location is their first one in Tulsa.  I believe they are out of Fayetteville.  I figured it would be full of FAIL with a name like that, but I usually grab a 'rito once a week there.  Rice & beans are great cycling fuel.  Their salsa is pretty good as well.

They are on par with Chipotle, Qdoba, or Freebirds, basically a huge stuffed burrito.  Saying one place or another is better out of those is really a tough claim since they all serve pretty much the same product for about the same price.  I like FBC as I can get in and out a whole lot easier than Chipotle on 15th at lunch time.

Qdoba is is clearly the worst of the 4.  Bland, soggy mess.  And it seems like they charge extra for a lot of items.

Anyhow, I guess today's news is that Tulsa Hills is also getting a Hideaway pizza..  I suppose that's the new structure that's popped up north of Sam's

I rate them:
1. Flying Burrito
2. Qdoba
3. Chipotle

Two burrito joints in Tulsa Hills would be odd. I'm gonna assume the reporter fumbled the burrito joint name and Freebirds is the one coming.

Ah, that's right.  I went there a couple of times.  I actually thought it was ok for what it was.  Taco Cabana, on the other hand, I had heads up on before it came to Tulsa (I had my first experience with the Cabana living in Houston in 1991...swore off that place after the first try).

I miss Atomic Burrito as they seemed to have more variety in options. I love Chipotle's rice, chicken and their hot sauce, so I place them first. Anyplace where I can watch them marinate, grill, and cut my food in front of me is A+ in my book. Flying burrito is 2nd but not very convenient for me, and nothing there is hot.

Qdoba is crap.

Any word on the development on the other side of 81st? That area really needs a grocery store. Might also be wise for the city to start looking at expanding that intersection before development makes it difficult.

Funny thing, it has taken them just as long to build and open the new Sam's as that car wash they mention.

Atomic Burrito  is still around, it's just called Los Cabos now.

I'm sorry to be a hater but I really have to just say...

Are we really getting excited about sams? boring chain food service?  In a suburban craphole of a development?  Don't get me wrong.  It is LOOONG overdue that the west side get some love.  That is beyond doubt.  I'm glad that they can get something going on over there that might help take down the idea that it's nothing but sewage treatment plants and oil refineries.  However,  being there or at 41st and yale or 71st and mingo or 111 and memorial is all the same.  They got a store full of 55 gallon drums full of crap you don't need? Oh Goodie!  Gimme a break.  I would get 10 times as excited about a locally owned business downtown providing a needed service than a sams or walmarts or Ikea or Urban outfitters (damn hipsters).

I remember when I was a kid growing up in southie, thinking that chain restaurants and big box stores meant progress and development. I remebe thinking that the walmart being built at 81st abd lewis was an awesome step forward.  Then I turned 17. The I realized that it's just status quo. Then I realized it's just more of the same.

I know that I'm being a huge downer but really, this sucks.  It just sucks. I want my city to do better than this.  I know it can.  We all do.

Suburban development is progress, like it or not, it is. Chain stores and restaurants can be a good thing. I'm very excited about the Dick's store opening.

No, no it isn't.  I realize that cities can't exist without buffers btween urban and agrarian. However, suburban development, [read: racially motivated, energy inefficent, social death-hole] is not progress.  it is the same development that was being built in 1965.  and 1985.  and 2005. They are all the same.  wether it was Utica square or tulsa hills they all helped to destroy our urban core.  You are excited about a Dick's sporting goods? I heard of a new food service place you might like called McDonalds.  I hear they have hamburgers or something.

I know that this really is something that bosts our local numbers.  I know.  I just HATE that we rely on people to come in from outside of tulsa to validate our city as a city.  "oh we have another dick's? I think slightly better of tulsa today."  But I really wish we could do something for ouselves, rather than build giant HVAC pits and rent them out to people that don't give a smile about our civic character.  I know we can.  I know we can.  I know we can.
