Anyone else watch the Ken Burns show on Prohibition on OETA?  (Parts 2 & 3 on Monday and Tuesday prime time)

Something I didn't expect was that most of the Prohibition movement was Progressive rather than RWRE Conservative.  Times have changed. Eventually Conservatives joined in with the inevitable leading to "the amendment".

I learned the drys substituted an income tax to replace the excise tax on lickher for the federal gooberment.

So, next time you pick up for a right wing cause remember it might take a bigger bite out of your grand kids future. These zealots who insist on amendments to the constitution are often mistaken for smart.

Burn's does a good job. I guess the next two episodes will target the negative results of prohibition.

Burns drew heavily on Daniel Okrent's "Last Call: The Rise and Fall of Prohibition."  I started reading it, but had other demands on my time.  It's available through TCCL.

There are interesting parallels between the rise of the dry movement and our present day political discussions.  It's always tempting to say that when we do not learn from history, we're destined to repeat it.

I've been yelling that ever since I started here.

Same with drug laws.  The advertising for this was spot on for our latest national insanity - pull out liquor and plug in drugs.

We never learn because we don't know history.

Missed the first one.  Had chores to attend to.

I don't share my thoughts because I think it will change the minds of people who think differently.  I share my thoughts to show the people who already think like me that they are not alone.
