Not to crap a Steve Jobs thread with commerce-related issues, but curious if anyone knows if iPhone 5 is still imminent?  I'm real close to pre-ordering a 4S tomorrow, as I'm due for an upgrade and I've been on an iP3 for over two years now.

No info on the 5 from me.  Grizzle's the guy for that.

I'm like you.  Due for an upgrade and locking in 2 more years.  I see a 4S in my very near future.

Nope, I've got other programs to deal with that.  But had to have iTunes to update the iOS.  None of the clones could do that.  You remember my ranting about it borking three upgrades in a row don't you?  I didn't ever use it for music, and will use other software out there for that.

I'm on iOS 5 now... cable free is nice.

Jobs and Gates (Gates lesser so in recent years) defined and pushed what computers and electronics are today. There is no-one in the industry today that is half the innovator either one was. Jobs turned his team over to a worthy crew a year ago to continue his vision. Gates turned his over to a moron, but that's another story.

I fear some slowdown in innovation with both both the greats out of the picture, until a new generation of greats can take their place. Unfortunately the computer market as it is today focuses more on creating innovations that can be sold to a big conglomerate, not on creating innovations for the sake of innovation.

A better explanation of Jobs that I've heard is that he is closer to Walt Disney and Steve Wynn than any other businessmen you can compare them to. All three took on markets and created businesses in a completely different direction. All three are willing to put extra work and effort into little tweeks and unseen details because they can't be satisfied if they don't. Wall Street and most of society can't appreciate that the majority of money spent to build a Wynn casino had nothing to do with gambling, that every corner on an apple product is a perfect curve, or that you will never find gum on the sidewalk at disneyworld, but they did.

I have worked on, and continue to work on products made by Compaq, HP, Sun, IBM, QNx, Oracle, Google, Novell, Redhat, Cisco, Microsoft, Dell, etc. I have only really used Apple products for the last few years and it was clear to me that they operate on a different plane of reality from all of the others, and that can only be attributed to Steve's direction since his return to Apple in the mid 90's.

He is not a saint, nor was he a genius, but he is probably one of the best innovators and CEO's to ever exist. While he may not be creating anything else we can only hope he will inspire others to try to create and run companies like he did.

iPhone 5 will likely be released in September 2012. I'm preordering a 4S tomorrow, selling my iPhone 4 and pocketing $100-$150 in the process.

Hearing an Apple II speak was what pushed me into the tech area in 1978. It was primitive, but helped me decided the field I wanted to be in someday.

I want my new phone to call me Professor Falken.

Dimensionally, I'm assuming the 4S is the same as the 4?  Just making sure they have otter boxes for them.  I'd be broke from repair fees if I hadn't put mine in an Otter Box right away.

Are you guys going for the 8, 16, or 32 (or is it 64) GB?  Curious too about tethering.  I was thinking about putting the internet back in my house, but if I got a tethering plan on my iPhone, and a good signal, then that's all I really need, isn't it?

Thanks, I'm about as technologically-challenged as they come.

How long until the inevitable "Hitler finds out Steve Jobs has died" video?

I enjoyed this, I have never really been an Apple Fan-Boy but I certainly appreciate the products he has helped bring to the market.

Steve Jobs didn't

Steve Jobs did not create products. He created an organization that predictably and reliably created emotionally resonant products.
Steve Jobs did not make movies. He made a company that predictably and reliably made blockbusters.
Steve Jobs did not wrest market share from competitors. He created new markets that attracted and sustained competitors.
Steve Jobs did not design anything. He gave others the freedom to think about what jobs products are hired to do.
Steve Jobs did not re-engineer processes. He brought engineering processes to works of creativity and the creative process to engineering.
Steve Jobs did not develop new management theories. He showed by example that innovation can be managed.
Steve Jobs was not a visionary. He put the dots together and saw where they led.
Steve Jobs was not a futurist. He just built the future one piece at a time.
Steve Jobs did not distort reality. He spoke what he believed would become reality at a time when those beliefs seemed far fetched.
Steve Jobs was not charismatic. He spoke from the heart compelling others to follow him.
Steve Jobs was not a gifted orator. He spoke plainly.
Steve Jobs was not a magician. He practiced, a lot.

He had taste.
He was curious.
He was patient.
He was foolish.
He was hungry.

My first computer was a Nolan Bushnell Atari.  :)

Another hippie success story. I'm watching Pirates Of Silicon Valley on AMC, they don't paint a very flattering picture of him, or Bill Gates for that matter.

16 is the smallest for the 4S.
I've done tethering and it works great, but you can't get tethering on an unlimited plan. Also, all the carriers are throttling people he use more than a couple of gig so your download speed would get progressively slower. AT&T's tethering plan gets you 4GB total for the month and it works cabled or wi-fi. You can also turn it on your account and turn it off if you hate it.
