Because apparently, in general, we are too stupid to live.

QuoteTULSA, Oklahoma -- Tulsa Police spent Monday morning reminding drivers about the dangers of railroad crossings.

Police officers were out at a Burlington Northern Santa Fe railroad crossing near 33rd West Avenue and Southwest Boulevard Monday handing out pamphlets on crossing safety.

Tulsa Police officer and Tulsa Traffic Safety Coordinator Craig Murray say trains always have the right of way.

When those crossing arms go down or the crossing lights start flashing, motorists and pedestrians need to know that means stop.

When we left the barbeque thing a few weeks ago, there was a train coming into town as we walked south.  Bars came down so we stood to enjoy watching the train go by.  It was about 300 feet from the crossing, moving pretty slow.  Even so, too fast to run in front of it.  Yet, there were 4 or 5 who did anyway.  Had to get to the beer tasting area, I guess...

Yeah, they beat the train across.  If one had stumbled and had to get up, he would not have made it across.
Think of it as evolution in action.

I don't share my thoughts because I think it will change the minds of people who think differently.  I share my thoughts to show the people who already think like me that they are not alone.

I guess this is why they always seem to have BNSF employees stationed at the crossing on Elgin there when a train passes as Drillers crowds are coming or going.

I've watched some people climb onto the slower moving trains and climb off on the other side to get from Bluedome to Drillers.

Stumble when you get off and lose a limb or worse. (potential darwin winners)

OK, so a car and a train collided today at 15th and SW BLVD...I guess the police were right after all and they need to hand out more flyers.

If we could get the governor to buy air time on all the TV stations every day, saying a big earthquake is coming, eventually she will be right. ;D

Same thing with the argument over expressway lights:

We turned off excess lights when the expense of operating them outweighed the benefits, and people complained loudly that there would be accidents.
Now, given that there have always been accidents, it was just a matter of waiting for the statistical probability to catch up before they could stand up and yell "TOLD YOU SO!"

The irony is that it took a lot longer to happen, because people were actually driving more attentively on the darker expressways and accidents were down (at least by police figures).
