Pat Robertson Asks ‘What Is This Mac And Cheese, Is That A Black Thing?’

700 Club host Pat Robertson was utterly flummoxed over a Thanksgiving food item discussed by co-anchor Kristi Watts during an interview with former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice. "What is this Mac and Cheese, is that a black thing?" Robertson asked in bewilderment.

"What's that one thing at Thanksgiving you just have to have?" Watts, who happens to be African-American, had asked Rice.

"It's Mac and Cheese," Rice responded.

A confused Robertson, who grew up in Lexington, Virginia, acted like he had never heard of the culinary dish, a popular American staple for generations and absent-mindedly singled out the meal as a food reserved for blacks. Smithsonian Magazine notes that Kraft Foods first introduced its boxed macaroni and cheese in 1937.

"It is a black thing, Pat!" exclaimed Watts. "Listen! And you guys! The world needs to get on board with macaroni and cheese. Seriously, I just– Christmas and Thanksgiving, we have to have macaroni and cheese and it just trips me out that you just don't. "

"I don't and I have never!" the televangelist conceded.

Talk about being out of touch with reality.  ::)

Home made Mac and Cheese is a must for our holiday gatherings.

It started when the kids were small and has carried over to one of those staples we simply can't cut out without half the family crying foul.

Trust but verify

There's more to it than throwing some cheddar cheese in some macaroni.  If you try it that way, you wind up with a separated oily mess.  (Don't ask how I know.)

Heat milk.  Don't let it boil!  Add mozzarella, provolone, and freshly ground pepper. (Smoked provolone is better, in my opinion, but She-Who-Must-Be-Obeyed differs.)  Stir continuously until cheese is melted and the sauce thickens.  Pour over cooked macaroni, shells, or tortellini.  Add cubed ham.  Toss and serve.

I'm hungry all of a sudden.

Sounds good.  My sister told me something similar after I noted the oily mess of just melting cheddar.  There was also a good looking recipe on OETA / Cooks Country last Saturday (I think) that I am going to check out.  The general URL is www.cookscountrytv.com  I haven't looked it up yet though.

Today I am cooking "the" turkey in the smoker.

This is the one I saw:

I think this one is the recipe they were trying to match the taste of the Mac & Cheese from Horn and Hardart Automat restaurants in Phila and NYC from the 50s.  I vaguely remember eating at a H&H a couple of times when I was young enough that I just barely remember it now.'

I always start with a bechamel sauce (with minced garlic and oniion) and then add the cheese and some sort of salted pork (bacon is awesome). Stir in undercooked noodles and bake topped with breadcrumbs or more shredded cheese. With the bechamel sauce you can stir in any cheese including cheddar and it won't break and turn oily.

Pork fat rules!  And should be used in every dish ever made!

How much is it ? 13 Dollars.......lol

Wouldn't eat it every day, but there are definitely mac & cheese dishes I'd pay thirteen bucks for. (I can't say if WP's is one of them)

I don't think I'd pay $13 for mac and cheese but there was a good seafood/pasta dish in Paia, Maui, Hawaii in November 2004 for about $15.  Fairly inexpensive for Maui.

Puck is too much into himself.  Haven't seen him in a show for several years and would probably change channels if ran across him.  It just seems to be more about how impressed he is with himself about who he knows rather than the food.

Alton seems to me to be just exactly the opposite of that.

And Pat Robertson?  Well, he is self-explanatory.
