Tulsa-based American Bank & Trust Co. has begun construction of a new corporate headquarters on the northwest corner of 61st Street and Yale Avenue.

When finished in about a year, the state-of-the-art, eight-story building will have 75,000 square feet of space, said Frazier Henke, president and CEO, in a news release.

"This new facility will allow us to provide our current and future customers with a more convenient banking experience, while yielding additional space for bank growth," he said.

Cost of the construction was not disclosed.

The building will house the company's lending, trust and corporate offices, as well as a multilane drive-through and parking garage.

An American Bank branch on the 2.5-acre property closed Friday and will be demolished to make room for the new headquarters, said Michael Oonk, senior vice president.

A mobile banking unit will open on the construction site Monday to provide services.

Oonk said the bank will maintain a branch at its current headquarters at One Warren Place, 6100 S. Yale Ave.

Initially American Bank plans to lease out about half of the new building, Oonk said.

The extra space will give the bank an opportunity to grow, he said.

American Bank & Trust acquired the property 30 years ago.

Interesting place for an 8 story tower.  With the St. Francis project there will be two mid-rises going up in that area.

Slightly off-topic, but I heard Warren Place across the street was originally supposed to be much larger and had at least one more tower included in the master plan.

If they ever put in those "Shoppes at Warren Place" along with the two new midrises, that would really start to flesh out this area.  I have also thought that it would be nice to have a couple of midrise/highrise towers up on the hill right behind Warren Place.  I could see people wanting to live there for it would have a fantastic view of downtown and the surrounding buildings, be in a nice area that has mix of urban/suburban feeling, be near where a lot of people may work, and be conveniently near the park and some shopping and dining.
