Just wanted to say thanks to all who post and read topics on this forum. I really enjoy all of our conversations and feel smarter and more involved by the words shared on this forum. 

I hope each of you have a special holiday season and get to spend Christmas Day with loved ones.

Have a wonderful Christmas, Michael.

This is probably as good a time as any to tell our Christmas story.

Mary and I moved here many summers ago.  We knew no one in Tulsa, so we had to rely on each other.  I'd met a few folks at work, of course, but that first Christmas here we were pretty much on our own.  A baby was on the way, due to arrive sometime in February, so Mary wasn't able to do much in the way of shopping.  Our budget wouldn't support it anyway.  Money was tight.  We couldn't afford a Christmas tree, so she decorated a lamp!

Christmas Eve seemed especially bleak.  We called family back home and talked, but it just isn't the same as sitting across the dinner table from loved ones.  Both of us come from large families, so it was normal to be surrounded by a crowd through the holidays.  Once, my family actually cooked two turkeys for Christmas dinner, and I counted 35 people sitting down to eat at Mary's house.  Being alone was a bit of a shock.

After hanging up the telephone that Christmas Eve, the apartment seems colder and emptier than ever.  It was about 8PM, and I thought it would be best to get her out of there before we both broke down in tears.  We decided to go out for dinner.

It's hard to find an open restaurant that late on Christmas Eve, but we managed it.  I knew the staff would be anxious to go home to their families, but our waitress took one look at Mary's bulging tummy, and treated her as if she were a daughter of her own.  There was no hurry, no urgency, just a lot of "hons", "dearies", and "sweeties" - all directed at Mary, of course, not me.  We were treated like family, not customers, and it's something indelibly etched in my memory.  I don't remember much else about that Christmas, but the kindness of a waitress, a stranger to both of us, will be with me forever.

So be good to those you meet, not just at this time of the year, but always.  We never know when we might just touch someone's life in an unexpected way.

I have freakin had it with teenagers getting pissed off at one of their own because they got more gifts. Sheesh. Grow up.
