As the weather gets warmer and the running season kicks off, I noticed there are many races coming up in Tulsa this year. Are there any forum runners here?  I'm a running nut and I'm thinking on entering the June 2nd "Hunger Run" it's on 96th & RiverSide at 8am and this year it's suposed to be bigger than last years race. I ran that race last year. There are also alot of those mud & obstical races listed for Tulsa but I have no intrest in that stuff. Oklahoma does have alot of Triathlans, but since I can't swim worth a hoot and don't cycle very good that just leaves me with the sport of running. I read the "Oklahoma Sports & Fitness mag" from Runner's World on Peoria they list all the events going on.

The thing starting this thread won't even be there.

If anyone wants to know if I'm in Omaha or Tulsa, you'll see me in Tulsa June 2nd at the Hunger 5K event, I'll likely be wearing green shorts and old ugly blue shoes. Tulsa seems to have many more races this year than last year. Tulsa is known as a "Runner's City".. There will be a 5K race on Memorial Day and two racing events on May 19th. We do have some runners on this forum I believe...  Those "mud runs and Obstical courses seem to be getting popular but I just don't get that, not for me. I did the "Hungar 5K Run" last year but my time was pretty grim, I hope to best it in this years Hunger Run and it's for a good cause... It's $25.00 on race day. Last year the weather was super on race day clear and sunny and race time temp was about 80 degrees at 8am.

Shoot...racing season is practically year-round for Tulsa. Great running community and you can usually find a local 5K every weekend.

Yeah 5Ks hurt if you're really racing it...but not convinced that the longer distances are any easier. What's tougher; maintaining a 7:30 pace over 3.1 miles or a 8:15 pace over 13.1 miles?

I did one 5K last year.

Barring Zombie Apocalypse or Dinosaur on the loose I generally don't prefer to move at any sort of speed.

I can't run very well in the winter or in cold weather, I can't get  my legs lose or my body  warmed up good-  I get ear aches if I run in the cold without cotton in my ears, I do my best running when it's 80 degrees or above, for me the running season is the summer months..   I can no longer hold a 7.5 pace at my age but I did do a pace 7.5  when I was younger. IMO a 10K race is the perfect distance, long enough to get in those easy middle miles and get a feel for the race course and other runners around you. A 5K is short and fast. Doing 8:15 over a half marathon is a very good strong hard running pace, my pace slips down to around 9.0 (or worse)  in longer training runs. My record 5K is 25:33.

I'm  working to beat my PR time in a 5K race of 25:33. I'd like to crack 25:00 but as I get older that goal will be harder to reach. I came close in the Route 66 5K CPA race last year with a time of 26:07. I think the hills and upgrades in the race course is what got me, during upgrades I can fell it eat up my speed and seconds and that race course had a few  upgrades. Many runners like to use a 5K to train or to graduate up to a 10K  and a half marathon and finally make the grade by doing a full marathon. I enjoy the  few minutes before a start of a race, talking with other runners and  everyone is pumped up and time seems to go fast, the guy on the Bull horn says "10 Minutes to start time" then before ya know it we're down to the last seconds before the gun goes off. After the race runners hang around to see the race results posted and then everyone leaves- the excitement is over. The big post race let down...

If popular culture is to be believed you don't have to move very fast to outrun zombies and depending on the dinosaur you just need to sit perfectly still.

Cylons, Terminators, Dobermans and Jason normally want you to get your heart rate up before they finish you off.

From "Sport Beans" a Racer's Poem: "Gun goes off. It's a madhouse traffic jam. Don't go too fast. Pace it. Big kicks. Who lives out here, anyway? Ok, Let's not hit the wall. Another hill, you can do this.. Feeling pretty good. It's just another run. A fast run, with Bib numbers and clocks. You got this... Bring on the finish line...~ Sports Beans..

www.athlinks.com  is a web site that keeps track of all your racing events, they also break down your race results into the pace per KM and pace per mile. The site also lets you look up races by the event and you can see the times that other runners do, and runners in your own age group. It's pretty kewl. After you do a race when the results are made final it's posted on your account. :)
