For LIFE no less. Beating RM to the punch...

QuoteThat prompted Romney to tell a story about his father, former Michigan Gov. George Romney, and what he'd found peeking through his father's "top drawer" as a teenager when he was rooting around for spare change.

"I found a little paper card, a little pink card, and it said this entitles George W. Romney to a lifetime of a hamburger, a shake and french fries at McDonald's," Romney said, according to a pool report. "It was signed by the hand of Ray Kroc. My dad had done a little training lesson or whatever for McDonald's when there was just a handful of restaurants, and I saw this thing and was like, 'This is a gold mine, dad! What are you doing?'"

Once he got over the shock, Romney said he had the card laminated for his father.

"My dad, as you know, would go almost every day to a McDonald's restaurant and get either a hamburger or a fish filet sandwich," Romney said. "And he would present this little card and of course the person behind the counter would look and say, 'Well, what is that?' They'd never seen something like that, but he said it was never turned down. They always honored it."

If I had started this thread, it would have been titled "Romney admits to stealing money from his dad".

"You'd vote for a man who steals from his family?"

"If he'd steal from his father what do you think he'll do to the middle class?"

"Would you trust this man with your medical care?"

He stole them from a child.

Mitt Romney was born in 1947. That means he would have been a teenager from 1960 through 1966. McDonald's hamburgers sold for fifteen cents a piece until 1966. Mitt's dad was governor of Michigan from 1963 to 1969.

If we are to believe this story, Mitt's dad went to McDonald's "almost every day" to save fifteen cents. He also would have gone to the restaurant in a government car with a government paid driver/security person. This was also before drive-thrus. Papa Romney would have had to leave the capital and his office to drive to and walk in the restaurant.

"I know we got a lot of work to do today here at the state capitol, but I will be right back after I make a quick run to get my free hamburger."

I'd rather eat the entire ketchup packet plastic and all than eat a MCheese.

That was back when 15 cents still could buy something.  I remember the kids up the street would go to the corner store to buy a pack of cigarettes for their mom for 25 cents.  A (real Delaware Valley) hoagie was 35 cents.  A loaf of bread was about 25 cents.

I am surprised that you haven't faulted the elder Romney for going to McDonald's, period.  You have totally neglected the mediocre nature of the food. You should be complaining that a man of his stature should not be anywhere near such a common place as a McDonald's.

Come on now RM, step it up a notch.

McDonald's might've tasted different back then.  Maybe less pink goo in the burgers.

Remember when Wendy's didn't suck?

I don't really remember going to McDonald's back then.  There were some locally owned burger stands (also about 15 cents) that we favored.  I know we had McD's in the area because I remember their sign saying how many hamburgers they had sold.  I think it was only a few billion then.

I used to go to Wendy's in the late 70s when I was going to TU.  I switched between Wendy's and Arby's and maybe one more but hardly ever went to McD's.

OK. His dad went out of his way to get a $1.06 burger.

Remember, Mitt says he did this almost every day.

So that's how Romney managed to put $100 million in his IRA!  He saved up his lunch money.  I wish I'd done that too, but foolishly I spent mine on food.

May you live in interesting times.
