Well I tell ya, if some rock was coming at  Earth from space and there was no hope, There was no question about it and  the rock was huge and would strike Earth dead on, - no close shave or near miss- and  it was going to be a planet wide "wipe off life" event- do you really think the government or NASA will warn people? They won't release any info about it to avoid a panic and riots. As the rock gets closer to Earth we may suddenly see a bright new "star" getting brighter & brighter as it moves ever closer to earth, but then how many people look at the stars at night? We won't know anything about it till the rock starts entering the Earth's upper reachs.
