Mayor Urges Air & Space Museum to Display Alternative to Theory of Gravity

"It's just a theory," LaFortune says.

Tulsa, OK.  A proposed display of observable planetary forces at the new Tulsa Air & Space Museum came under fire on Wednesday, at a meeting of the Vision 2025 Oversight Committee.

In response to a proposed contract for display panels and interior fixtures, Tulsa County resident Wayne Drewery submitted a petition to the Committee, demanding that the museum install a Christian alternative to the proposed depiction of Sir Isaac Newton's explanation of the force of gravity.

Mayor Bill LaFortune made a rare appearance before the Committee to lend his support to Mr. Drewery's proposal.  "I think we should give equal time to the biblical perspective that teaches us that God is holding us fast to this planet with large magnets placed under the Earth's crust, pulling at the fillings in our teeth."

The theory of gravity, presented as the "Universal Law of Gravitation" in the proposed display, states that any two objects in the Universe exert attraction on each other, with the force having a universal form.

"It's just a theory," the Mayor said in his 45-minute presentation to the board.  "It's no more or less valid than any other theory."

"These proposed panels are written at the third-grade level.  They're obviously aimed at children, and I'm not afraid to say, right here in front of these reporters and photographers, that we need to take that into account."

In addition to "The Attractive Force of Celestial Bodies – Newton, an Apple, and You," other panels submitted for approval by the museum's director include depictions of Newton's Laws of Motion.

Local radio personality Michael DelGiorno added his support Thursday morning for the Mayor's action.  "The public schools have been indoctrinating our kids for decades with the pseudo-science of gravity and the 'Cult of Isaac Newton.'  I guess LaFortunate Son's handlers finally got one right."

DelGiorno added, "I probably won't press down as hard now with the pen when I sign his recall petition."

Travelers at the nearby airport had mixed reactions to the Mayor's election-year initiative.  "On one hand, it's the only position I can remember him taking during his term," said 24-year-old former Tulsa resident Chad Minick, traveling to his new post-graduate home in Chicago.  "On the other hand, I had assumed we had kind of moved past that one."

The Vision 2025 Oversight Committee tabled action on the proposed contract and will address it and Mr. Drewery's proposal at the Committee's next regular meeting, on June 22nd.
